LUMBERTON — Southeastern Regional Medical Center has been named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence, placing it among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the country.

HealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent health care ratings organization, conducted a quality and clinical excellence study, which was released today, of the nation’s 5,000 hospital across 26 medical diagnoses and procedures, and found SRMC among the top tier in its clinical performance.

“Southeastern Regional Medical Center can be proud of the contributions of its physicians, nurses and staff in achieving outstanding patient care,” Kristin Reed, HealthGrades vice president of hospital ratings and author of the study, said in a statement. “Lumberton and the surrounding communities are fortunate to have access to some of the highest quality hospital care in the nation.”

HealthGrades evaluated the hospitals on clinical outcomes, including risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications. The analysis is based on approximately 40 million Medicare discharges for the years 2008, 2009 and 2010.

The study quantified the effect of differences in hospital quality in terms of lives lost and unexpected complications.

According to the study’s results, Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence like SRMC had a 30 percent lower risk-adjusted mortality rate and a 2 percent lower risk-adjusted in-hospital complication rate among Medicare beneficiaries compared with all other hospitals.

If all hospitals performed at the distinguished level, 165,704 lives could potentially have been saved and about 6,800 in-hospital complications could have been avoided.

Joann Anderson, president and CEO Southeastern Regional Medical Center, said that hospital has a focus on providing high-quality care. “Our results validate we are achieving that level,” Anderson said. “We continue to identify areas to improve. I am extremely proud of our health care team.”

HealthGrades, headquartered in Denver, Colo., allows individuals to see its review and to compare their local hospitals online at www.healthgrades.com.

SRMC also recieved the company’s Outstanding Patient Experience Award for 2009-2011, Cardiac Care Excellence Award in 2012, and its Pulmonary Care Excellence Award in 2012.
