That’s how close Lumberton pitcher Donnie Jacobs came to throwing a perfect game during the No. 1 Pirates’ 13-0 five-inning win over No. 8 Westover in the nightcap of the Robeson County Slugfest’s first round Saturday at Finley Read Field.
“We’re sitting there saying we got something special going on, let’s not talk about it,” Lumberton head coach Paul Hodges said.
Holding the 13-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth — after erupting for 10 runs in the top of the frame — the Pirates (10-6) emptied their bench to get substitutes playing time.
Unfortunately for Jacobs, it led to a misplayed fly ball that dropped in for a hit, pushing the starter from perfection to a one-hit shutout. He struck out 10 of the 16 batters he faced.
“He’s throwing strikes. He’s getting better and better each game,” Hodges said.
Ben Floyd, Kelton Brayboy, Daniel Oxendine and Terrance Rucker had a double apiece for Lumberton. Floyd led in RBIs with two.
Westover gave up six walks and committed five errors.

Golden Tornadoes topple Red Springs

The Golden Tornadoes pushed across four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to end the game in six innings. Leading the way for Fairmont was Cain Wilkerson who went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple. Josh Ammons added three hits.
Alex Britt notched the win for Fairmont (11-2).
Lady Rams roll by Red Springs
The No. 1 Purnell Swett softball team needed just four innings to put a 16-1 rout of No. 8 Red Springs in the books.

Swett edged by West Bladen
Late-game struggles continue to plague The Purnell Swett baseball team.
The No. 3-seeded Rams let a one-run led slip away, as it gave up two in the sixth to yield an eventual 5-4 loss to No. 6 West Bladen.
Kyle Meismer kept Swett’s bats in check en route to the win. Clint Allen led the Knights with four hits.
Jordan Brooks and Ricky Ivey had a hit apiece for the Rams.
Lady Mustangs shut out St. Pauls
Taylor Jacobs threw a complete-game shut out to lead the No. 5 South Robeson softball team to a 12-0 rout of No. 4 St. Pauls.
