Miss UNCP pageant will be decided Thursday

PEMBROKE — Givens Performing Arts Center is getting pretty in preparation for the arrival of its yearly pageant to crown Miss UNCP.

Seven women will compete for the crown this year at the scholarship pageant on Thursday at 7 p.m. They will also say good-bye to Miss UNCP 2008, Jamee Hunt.

The pageant is a scholarship competition which will award the winner $1,000 scholarship and a $1,000 wardrobe allowance for the next competition she will face, the Miss North Carolina Pageant.

First runner-up receives $500, the second runner-up $300 and the third runner-up $200.

The competition consists of a private interview, an on-stage question, an evening wear, swimsuit and a talent competition for each contestant. In addition, the contestants must complete a platform or community service essay that is not more than 300 words long, which they will be asked about during their private interview. The essay should be about a national public interest.
