It is official; school is out for summer and Robeson County Public Library wants to invite you to participate in Summer Reading. Registration is now open and you can also sign up any time throughout the summer.

The official Summer Reading Kick Off is scheduled for Monday with Joy the Clown of Magical and Unforgettable Moments performing at the Pembroke Public Library at 10 a.m. and at the Osterneck Auditorium across from the Robeson County Public Library at 2 p.m. Joy the Clown will bring magical illusions, lively music, storytelling, lots of comedy and a bunny to entertain and delight the audience.

Summer Reading is for everyone. Katie Huneycutt has weekly programs planned for children from preschool to fifth grade at all of the Robeson County libraries from Monday through Aug. 3. The schedule is posted on the website at www.robesoncountylibrary.org or you can call us at 910-738-4859 for more information. The Summer Reading theme this year is Dream Big. Come embark on some big dreams of your own as you fill the summer vacation with lots of stories and programs at your local library.

The following movie programs are scheduled at the Osterneck Auditorium: “How to Train Your Dragon” on June 25, “Racing Stripes” on July 9 and “The Spiderwick Chronicles” on July 23. Movies will begin at 2 p.m. Parents must stay with children 8 years old and younger.

Lisa Matthews will be conducting Kid’s Crafts programs on Thursday at 2 p.m. through July 26. Students from first to fifth grade are invited to attend. All craft supplies are provided.

The teen Summer Reading program is for students from sixth grade through 12th grade. The theme this year is Own the Night. Programs will be held at the Lumberton Library on Thursdays starting this Thursday at 4 p.m. and going until July 26. Some highlights of the program include a Thriller Crash Course on June 28 designed to have you performing Michael Jackson’s Thriller, an Evening of Relaxation with Yoga on July 12 and a Book Fair of Death where participants will act out a murder mystery on July 26. The grand finale is a Zombie Lock In on Aug. 3 from 6 to 7 p.m. A zombie walk with refreshments will follow in the garden. Prizes for the most authentic zombie makeovers will be awarded.

Parents can take advantage of Summer Reading to show children that reading is fun and entertaining. The Adult Summer Reading Theme is Between the Covers. Read a book, write a short review and submit it at any of our libraries. All reviews will be entered into a drawing to win prizes at the end of the Summer Reading Program. The more you enter the greater your chances to win.
