LUMBERTON — A 27-year-old Lumberton man is in jail after being charged with the Tuesday morning murder of an off-duty Lumberton police officer.

Marques Ramon Brown, who also goes by the first name of Marcus, is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 33-year-old Master Police Officer Jeremiah Goodson. Brown has listed addresses at 207 Laurel Court and 409 Beech Court, both in Turner Terrace on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Goodson is the first Lumberton police officer to be killed while on duty in 76 years.

Brown was brought to the Robeson County Courthouse by agents of the State Bureau of Investigation at about 7 p.m.Tuesday, according to jail records. He is now at the Cumberland County jail.

Goodson was shot at about 11 a.m. at the Xpress Depot, at 5030 Fayetteville Road, while serving a warrant for Brown’s arrest. Goodson, who was off-duty, had recognized Brown, who was sitting in a vehicle, and called for backup. As Goodson and the assisting officer approached the vehicle, Brown opened fire, hitting Goodson more than once. It is unclear how many times Goodson was hit.

The assisting officer held Brown at gunpoint until another officer arrived and he was taken in custody, according to police Capt. Johnny Barnes

Brown was wanted for two charges of failure to appear in court — one for possession of a firearm by a felon and one for carrying a concealed weapon.

Brown also had outstanding warrants in Columbus County for receiving stolen property and obstructing an officer. According to the Columbus County clerk of court, charges are pending for a 2011 assault on a government official.

Barnes said the investigation has been turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation, and he expected additional charges.

Brown’s incarceration history dates back to 2003 at the Robeson County jail and includes time served for several probation violations and for possession of stolen goods, breaking and entering with larceny, possession of a firearm by a felon, contempt of court, breaking into a motor vehicle and larceny of a motor vehicle.

At a press conference Tuesday afternoon at the site of the murder, Chief Mike McNeill said he wasn’t ready to disclose details regarding the shooting. McNeill could not be reached this morning.

“All I can tell you right now is that, we did have an officer shot and killed, Officer Jeremiah Goodson,” McNeill said. “I cannot even tell you about the further investigation right now because the SBI is leading this investigation with the Lumberton Police Department. You see us still here; we’re going to support them in any way we can on getting down to the full investigation of this officer getting shot.”

Goodson’s wife is pregnant with their second child.

“She’s holding on. The family’s holding good,” McNeill said.

McNeill said that an officer’s job doesn’t stop when he goes off duty.

“When you become a police officer, you’re 24/7,” he said. “We have things in place that when you do happen to see something outside the time that you’re working, we do have things in place that you call other officers.

Goodson had been employed with the Lumberton Police Department since June 14, 2006, according to James Moore, Human Resources director for the city. He drove patrol car No. 45. Goodson worked as a resource officer for Lumberton High School while serving in the Juvenile Division in 2010.

Many tributes were being posted on Facebook on Tuesday and early today. Condolences for Goodson’s family can also be found at odmp.org, where memorials are posted for fallen officers.

According to the website, the last time a Lumberton police officer was killed was on Nov. 18, 1936, when Chief Vance R. McGill was accidentally shot and killed when a pistol he was examining discharged. The last Robeson County lawman to die in the line of duty was Arthur Oxendine, a sheriff’s detective who died in a wreck on Oct. 1, 1993.

Karen Higley, head of the community watch for East Lumberton, is asking that American flags fly at half mast until Goodson’s funeral.

Anyone who leaves or even thinks of leaving a derogatory comment about the Thin Blue Line needs to just step back right now and go do something else. Unless you have faced death daily to make your living, then go do your quarterbacking somewhere else.

Kudos to the robesonian in reporting. Put the pic of the scum off his Facebook page back up so that as many young people as possible can see the face of Satan. And why was a felon living in public housing? I thought this was prohibited? If not then it certainly should be. He lists his employer on this page as himself. Guess that's pushing stolen stuff and drugs.

This whole tragic story presents the dichotomy we are seeing now in society with the intentional destruction of the family. On the one hand you have an exemplary man, protector, father, husband, friend, and a paragon. On the other hand, same type of man, yet this one spits on everything good. Willing to bet he has no idea who his sperm donor was, and no idea of education or real work, thanks to liberal society as created by Johnson. God has been run out of schools, shacking is the norm and is taxpayer supported, and the youth are fed into the thug machine called popular culture and social programs.

Sit at home this fall and don't vote, or even worse, go vote for a democrat and watch what is left of this country continue to die a slow death. There are more Browns mow than Goodsons, literally, and unless you personally are pArt do the solution, you ARE the problem. And apologies to Mr Douglas, you are a fine editor. Please keep us all informed on fundraisers for this family.

Again I've read and agreed with some of what your beliefs are but to make this about Democratic ideals is as wrong as it would be to make the tragedy in Colorado about Republican or Tea Party ideals. After all, as an NRA member myself, I'm well aware that the Republican and Tea parties are much more staunch supporters of the 2nd Amendment right of you and me and that lunatic to buy and possess the weapons and ammunition needed to carry out such a cowardly deranged act than are most moderate or liberal Democrats. This in no way though should be put forth by anyone as the cause for these murders. While I'll defend your your right to have your own beliefs no matter how close to mine or how far apart, I submit for your consideration that no single group in America or the world for that matter has a monopoly on right or wrong or about morality. All groups are comprised of both kinds of people. Does my group have a 10 to 1 good to bad ratio while yours has an 11 to one good to bad, only an all knowing merciful God can say for sure and He hasn't told me whether He is a Republican or a Democrat so I think I'll hold off on sweeping generalities. As I've followed this tragic Hero's death on these comments I believe that the compassionate comments are coming from all races of Robesonians as well as from all faiths and this can be his greatest legacy if we can use our commonalities to unify us rather than using our differences to further drive us apart. Just a thought.

As part of the fellow emt, police and firefighter crew I would personally like to share my anger of how people are spreading rumors of how and what happened following these tragic events. Please do not spread rumors while the county is grieving for our fallen officer. Shame on you all trying to get gossip started!

As the wife of a Police Officer of 21 years, there is never any peace when they walk out that door until you see their face again. The last few years he has been on the warrant squad. When taking that position he assured me (thinking I don't know after all these years) that it was much safer because he'd know what he was dealing with. If you are in law enforcement, there are no "safer" positions. It is unbelievable to me how much my husband's life means to my family and how little it means to some useless piece of dirt thug. I know the Goodson family is devastated. No words can assure his wife or ease the pain she carries for her and her two children. How do you explain that to your children and what a shame the baby she's carrying will never know her father. The only comfort she can take is what an outstanding man her husband was and that God himself will welcome him into heaven with open arms. Shame on Marques Ramon Brown. There is a special place in hell for him and other's like him.

I like a lot of you wouldve been happy to see brown take the same fate as the officer he shot. but in reality, put yourself in the second officers shoes, im positive it crossed his mind, but then you have to put law abiding it front of everything. he did what was right, not for goodson, not for himself, not for vengence, but for the citizens of lumberton. for the families that had no choice but to witness what they had already witnessed. i applaud him in his so called "lack" of action, those of you that said he froze and needs a new job, put yourself in his shoes, i bet 95% of people wouldve froze. imagine standing there with your brother or sister and watching them get shot, i know most of you say you wouldnt freeze up, but until your in that situation you dont know. its sad that it had to came to that, its sad he'll never see his children grow up, he wont be able to grow old with his wife, he wont get the chance to retire etc. i hope justice is harsh for brown and i hope it lasts a very long time.

i believe he should skip out of the court and right into a electric chair. let the fallen officers family be there so they can witness him be executed for his crimes. I dont think our hard earned money should have to pay for these criminals to be taken care of in our prison.

white, black, or indian. VOTE, VOTE, VOTE, and Vote. Our leaders are the ones who change the rules and put thes killers, drug dealers, crooks, etc... back on the street. People are being taken off death row for the craziest reasons. the jury didnt have enough of one race or they were abused as children. whatever the reason, its crazy. I hope and pray that justice is served. God Bless the Lumberton PD and everyone that has been touched by this sensless act. I hope Robeson County and all others get there act together and keep these criminals locked up where they belong.

Robesonian is always a step behind....... WRAL.COM has the MUGSHOT on the front page of the thug, what a piece of work. Also, someone posted on here he has a FACEBOOK page holding a pistol? Parading thug-life (so-called) and we as a society put up with it. Electric chair or out back would be better

Terrylock,

Actually, we broke the story about 12:30 yesterday, had it on website first and updates throughout sday. The photo that WRAL and many news organizations used of Goodson came from us with our permission. We were way ahead of everyone in reporting this story. The information about who did it was released late last night, and we don't publish until this afternoon. Can't help the timing of that.

@terrylock: You're making a BAD mistake when you make derogatory remarks about THE ROBESONIAN or Donnie Douglas. Mr. Douglas has done more for this county by reporting the news in a fair and unbiased way than people will ever realize. And he did the same thing with this story.

I can only speak for my family and I. Our home was broken into and we lost pretty much everything.Officer Goodson was the first to arrive. This was in June. But the awesome most caring thing he did was he came back by just to check on our family. This officer was an all around man without a bad reputation. He talked to a dealt with issues of teens, issues that their parents don't even know about. He encourage many. Now here is the question with all that he spoke and done, he lead by example. What are you going to do with the wisdom and knowledge that he spoke over your life. Many time people are so full of hurt that they lash out, But stop and think. A son,a father,a husband, a brother,a officer, and a friend die on your behalf. On duty or not he still held his position. Lumberton, it is truly time out for all the madness. Someone needs to fall on their face and pray......Goodson family my prays go out to you all. Don't be mad just know that God can and He will.

Jeremiah, was an AWESOME friend who will be missed. I never saw him with a smile on his face. He loved his jon and the children that he worked with daily. He was so concerned about the "gangs" in Lumberton. He was so proud of his was expecting a new baby. It was sad day when he couldn't even complete a task on his job, a job that he loved so much. A coward had to shoot him. I'm sure the suspect will have a trial out of Robeson County, due to the fact that everyone knew Jeremiah. I just hope the DA will give him the death sentence. I will be praying for Jeremiah's family and friends, as well as the suspect's family and friends. Even though he chose the wrong path in life, he does have a family that cares about him. I pray they will all find peace and feel the arms of God wrapped around them.

If all of you really want to be sickened, get on the Raleigh tv comment site and read all the bleeding heart liberal Obama voters whining about the death penalty in the comment section of this story. They claim it's cheaper to keep the perp alive than to let him go to his father Satan. How sick people are today. Money makes no difference in a case like this. Put this scum to death and it's for darn sure he won't be preying on the public any more, with the help of our sorry judges. Please people, go and vote them all out, including the sorry DA that helps with these plea bargains. And go to the NC Deopt of Corrections website and see for yourself what they have released back on the streets to prey on us.

If, as your handle implies, you have served our country then accept my appreciation for said service. However, please don't try to associate this with a President who has ordered the killing of more US enemies in the last 3 years than had been killed in the previous 8 years, with Bin Laden being the most important. I fully support Capital punishment for heinous crimes such as this and could sleep like a baby that night if I was allowed to push the button on this animal. I also choose to support at least some of what the Obama administration has done or has tried to do so please reconsider making sweeping associations. Just a thought.

The Fay paper reports the perps name as Marques Ramon Brown, a black man from Columbus co with a huge rap sheet in Robeson. Breaking and entering, receiving stolen goods, felon with fire arm, stolen vehicle are all listed on the prison website as felony convictions. Want to see for yourself? Click this link and you can. http://webapps6.doc.state.nc.us/opi/viewoffender.do?method=view&offenderID=0866140&searchLastName=Brown&searchFirstName=Marques&searchMiddleName=R&searchGender=M&listurl=pagelistoffendersearchresults&listpage=1

WHY is this multiple felon even out of jail to kill? These sorry azzed judges involved in these convictions have this good mans blood on their hands.

Please people, go to the polls and vote to kick out every sitting judge except Richardson. He is tough on crime. The rest are jokes, and can almost be considered defector accessories to murder. It's them who unleash this human scum back on the streets to terrorize us all. Let's see if Mr Douglas will print this little piece of truth

Looks like Mr. Douglas printed it. Just like he does 99% of whats wrote in these comment sections. Donnie Douglas DOES NOT censor. Never has, never will. And he tells Robeson County citizens THE TRUTH about what goes on.

Just watch our sorry legal system slap this worthless waste of space with only a life sentence. He probably has already been in prison numerous times anyway. Why not immediately execute him without the waste of the time and money involved in a trial. If u ask me our legal system doesn't want crime to stop because there is just to much money involved. What if this guy shot one of the President's daughters? I bet u he would be executed. The reason thugs like this do such things is because u can't hurt them with a life sentence and they know it. If the legal system would immediately do what they are suppose to do then crime would certainly be reduced.

The citizens in this county that sit on the jury will be the ones that decide whether or not to give him a life sentence or the death penalty not the judicial system............... So dont blame the courts.

I see it all the time in jury trials where jurys let criminals get life instead of death and then complain about the murders in the county.

But youre right there hasnt been a death sentence handed out by a jury in this county in over 30 years so yes youre right he probably only will get life.................
