LUMBERTON — District Attorney Johnson Britt will seek the death penalty for the man who is charged with shooting and killing Lumberton police Officer Jeremiah Goodson on Tuesday.

“… He is accused of killing a police officer,” Britt said. “That’s an aggravating factor under North Carolina statue.”

Marques Brown, 27, is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting that killed Goodson at the Xpress Depot, at 5030 Fayetteville Road while the officer was attempting to serve a warrant for Brown’s arrest.

Brown had his first appearance hearing on Wednesday in courtroom 3C of the Robeson County Courthouse, via video teleconference from the Cumberland County jail, where he is being held. Brown’s court date was set for Aug. 1.

Details about the shooting that killed Goodson have been slow to emerge, but Lumberton Police Chief Mike McNeill did say that the officer who assisted Goodson was Ronnie Hayes. Hayes, who is 30, is a police officer level 3 who has worked for the department since 2008, according to James Moore, Human Resources director for the city.

McNeill would not reveal any other details about the shooting, including whether or not Brown was alone. He deferred to the State Bureau of Investigation, which is leading the investigation, but repeated attempts to get information from that agency have failed.

Brown was wanted for two charges of failure to appear in court — one for possession of a firearm by a felon and one for carrying a concealed weapon, according to Lumberton police Capt. Johnny Barnes. He also had outstanding warrants in Columbus County for receiving stolen property and obstructing an officer, Barnes said.

According to the Columbus County clerk of court, charges are pending for a 2011 assault on a government official.

“After attempting to stop him, he led us on a chase into Bladen County,” Sgt. Andre Jackson, of the Whiteville Police Department, told WECT. “We had to get assistance from the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, Highway Patrol, and the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office. He eventually crashed and we caught him.”

A photo on Brown’s Facebook page shows him pointing a handgun at the screen with the caption “salute me or shoot me.” According to information on his Facebook page, Brown attended Lumberton High School.

Brown’s incarceration history dates back to 2003 and includes time served for several probation violations and for possession of stolen goods, breaking and entering with larceny, possession of a firearm by a felon, contempt of court, breaking into a motor vehicle and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Goodson was off-duty and traveling on Fayetteville Road when he recognized Brown, who was sitting in a vehicle, and called for backup. As Goodson and Hayes approached the vehicle, police say Brown opened fire, hitting Goodson more than once.

Goodson is survived by his wife Lametria, who is due to have the couple’s second child any day, and their young daughter.

McNeill said that he made a 10 p.m. visit on Tuesday to Goodson’s aunt’s home in Lumberton, where Goodson’s family had gathered.

“She has her good moments and her bad moments,” he said.

Goodson is the first Lumberton police officer to die in the line of duty since 1936. The last lawman to die while on the job in Robeson County was a sheriff’s detective in 1993.

Funeral arrangements for Goodson are being handled by Colvin Funeral Home, at 1904 East Elizabethtown Road. The day and time of the funeral will be released this afternoon, a funeral spokesperson said.

This is the first person this guy has killed. He goes around bragging about the people he has killed to family and friends that help him with his kills. He thinks this is funny. This low life doesn't deserve to live. The people that were with him doing all of crime Quincy and Lorenzo should be punished as well. As well as the female that he was living with. Their is no room for thugs like this. Something has to be done. People can't just go around here taking lives and thinking their is no consequences to their actions. This guys family is upset and crying over this piece of trash not even considering the peoples families this guy has ruined. People wake up it is time for a change. Public housing needs to evict the person that allowed Marqus to live with them. To the family of Jeremiah I am so sorry for you lost. Jeremiah didn't deserve this. He was a good cop.

Amen to the eviction. It out to be done before nightfall. Get their mess and throw it on the curb. Along with them. Prosecute everybody in the car with the trash too.

And yes it's time to talk about race. About how race shouldn't matter, and character should. Two black men...one evil to the core and the other a paragon. All you baby mommas out there need to ask yourselves which one you would want to claim.

Until black society stops glamorizing gangsta lifestyles, this will continue. If Obama had a son, which would he claim, I wonder? If you are a parent, first clean up your own life. Quit shacking, drugging, stealing, tugging, and then get control of your child before he is just another Marques

@RangerSgt...A white man just killed 12 and injured 70 in Colorado, and the media stated he hated Hip Hop Gangsta music so what you said (like everything else you post) is fallacious, if you wanna bring race in to it more white people endorse the Hip Hop culture than blacks lol. You might have everyone else on this site fooled but I can tell you just a racist yourself sitting behind a computer waiting on a black man to get locked up so you can say negative things. You sir are a perfect refection of Robeson County!

I just want to say that I know Ronnie Hayes personally and I know that he did what he thought was right. You have to protect the public's safety. You can't just be a renegade and take him out. I agree with the people who say that there could have been innocent bystanders injured if Ronnie had retaliated. I'm sure he was more concerned about his fallen officer. Shame on you for condemning an officer who had to make a split second decision. I'm sure either decision he would have made would have been the "wrong one" according to you. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Goodson family (especially his wife) and officer Hayes who was doing his job to the BEST of his abilities!!!

I have been reading the post on here for the past few days and have read may different opinions of people. Its hard to say what one would do in the situation like this and I commend Officer Hays the backup officer. Should he have discharded his fire arm he would now too be under investigation. Two wrongs never make nothing right. He is a well trained officer and did his job however hard it was knowing his co-worker (brother) was in danger. I know he is having a hard time now and my prayers are with him as well as officer Goodson's family. I had the pleasure of knowing officer Goodson and he was great with kids. You could tell he loved what he did. We as a community is still trying to wrap our minds around this terrible tradegy and it has been sad. So pray for the Lumberton Police Department and the Family of Officer Goodson.

NOW....Have any of you stopped to think when you call Marques Brown a thing, that trash, it and other choice words that you a also hurting his family. Whatever we may think about him killing this wonderful officer he does have someone that loves him (mother, aunt, grandparent) and they are hurting too. Not to mention that if our hearts are right with God, how does it make us any better of a person to hurt (using tongues as weapons) his family. Are we any better off then he is when he took a gun and shot him when we say these things that probably cut deep into his mother's heart, are we not killing her sole? So pray for them also.

Amen God is the only judge, Brown still has a soul and his family needs for true christian people to join together and pray for her son. God can change anyone, people you may never now when you maybe faced with a situation that Brown's mother is facing. All of the families that are effected by this bad choice needs our prayers so let's abide together in prayer for God to give them strength.

People wake up the bible is fulfilling everyday and Jesus Christ is soon to come, ask yourself are you ready for the coming of the Lord? Get Ready Jesus Christ is Coming!!!!!

This is why people will not look black people (good or bad, again we don't know) in the eye in public. This is not good either, it makes some blacks act in public places as if they are invisible. But people do look at you, just not so you can see us, but they do watch how you conduct yourselves in public and a lot of times(most) it's not good.

Did I make a judgement based on whatever? Sure I did, I'm human...

Do you make judgemments daily? Sure you do, here is just one: You are late for work, in a hurry, on 211. You are approaching a stop light, in one lane is a loaded dump truck, the other lane a corvette... a judgment needs to made quickly.... What vehicle do you get behind?.... Judgements, we make em everyday based on preconsieved knowlege we already have... sorry.

"WHAT". Do you think this guy did this because of the color of his skin or the content of his character? Skin color doesn't make a person bad, his/her character does? Let's look at Jerry Sandusky-now should I look at all of white america as molesters and pedophiles. Let's look at the number of white children abducted and murdered by white men? Should I make the assumption that every white male is capable of snatching up young white girls and killing them? Let's look at the number of white women killed by their husbands? Come on Ross. Now, if you see me in public and I am cursing and acting ignorant (black, white, indian, hispanic) then you can judge my character. But to judge every black by the action of some, is no better than every black judging and stereotyping all white males as molesters. We never know who we are dealing with. But it's not based on race, it's based on character. Best example is Sandusky, he molested children for over 30 years and because of status and race he slid under the radar. Trust me my child will never go to a camp with white males, because they are all molesters (my point exactly).

Ross, the reason you won't look a person is the eye is because you are a coward and less than a man. I was taught to look a person squarely in the eyes. Yes, everybody does make judgements, however, if you've ever stepped outside of Robeson county...maybe your perspectives would be different. Right now, you're looking through your ignorance, closed minded, and bigoted haze. And last ime I checked, Black people weren't the only ones in Robeson county committing crimes. Please, please read a book, travel, watch something on tv other than NASCAR!

I just want to say as a Lumberton native and currently serving in the US Army, I think that this is so sad. I too stand on the front line.....situations like this are called procedures. The officer was down....so Hayes de-escalated the situation to prevent any further casualties. People are so quick to judge what we do as Military/Police Officers/ etc..The report stated that there were children and people around....WHy the heck would you continue to put other people in harms way....that would have another story on the LPD.....just think people.

I lived in Lumberton for a short time -- a very short time but long enough to get to know LPD. I'm sorry that they are experiencing this loss and I'm thinking about them. They are a good group of dedicated and hardworking individuals.

I live in a community in which our police department lost two officers in a little more than a month -- one shortly after Christmas and then another at the end of January this year. Both were shot while on duty.

The first was shocking and shook our community. It was just too much. Then, we lost another. It didn't make sense and it wasn't fair that two good people who dedicated their lives to protecting the community were killed in such senseless ways.

We were sad. We were broken. We were also really angry.

Our community rallied around our officers. We comforted each other. We all united.

I know you'll do the same. Surround your police department with love. Support them and support each other.

You are on many of our minds in Aiken.

Good job to officer, he probably couldn't shoot because other bystanders around. So dont talk junk about him when he is out there risking his life for us against low life thugs like this. Blame the thug that has to pull a gun out and blame family or friends that knew he was wanted and could care less. Just need to bring back the old days in the way the handled this criminal to set an example.

Amen!!! Dont deserve to sit in jail and be fed daily. His facebook page talks about blowing innocent peoples heads off! Complete lowlife. To the officer that held him at gun point and arrested him, you are a brave good sole. Remaining composure not to blow his head off and do like you are suppose to deserves credit. Now this officers family lost someone so carelessly. Thoughts and prayers are with them and everyone in robeson county.

@Ross...This is not the article nor occassion for your bigotry and racist views. At no point did anyone mention race... every article you are quick to bring the matter up... as if all blacks run to the media and NAACP for attention. If you want to comment... rally to the community and media to fight against violent crimes. Support this officer, his family, and his co-workers. Don't use the Robesonian to boost your cause... "WE" are sick of it you say... but "YOU" are the only one with such a DISRECTFUL and IGNORANT comment... This is about an OFFICER doing his job and having his life taken away without cause. This is about an OFFICER who had contributed to society positively, this is about an OFFICER who encouraged and assisted troubled youth with returning to school and completing school, this is about an OFFICER who return to crime scenes to check on victims after the case had been completed...This is NOT about a BLACK OFFICER.... but a DEDICATED OFFICER...so leave your political bias, race motivated, and flat out stupid malarkey out of the article.

I know you will have a repost...but I wont aknowledge it because it will be same as usual...

To Goodson family, LPD, the assisting officer, and local law enforcement agencies...continue to serve you communities in a manner such as Jeremiah. At times it may seem as you arent accomplishing anything, but be assured... somewhere in your daily duties, you are having a positive effect on someone life. That person you locked up for break-ins is giving the family security... those drugs you just took off the street will not make it to the drug addict that was going to pawn his/her child's property. It might seem like a small dent... but it is dent... STAY STRONG AND STAY FOCUSED. JG-45 R.I.P

People you just can't address "ignorance". No matter how bad you want to. You just can't do it. Trust me justice will be served in this case. Now, that the death penalty is being sought, where is the jury that will support it. Rossiswrong/Prejicution are at it again. They can't sleep at night with out thinking politics. In the words of Ann Romney "You people have all you need". Now, who was she addressing. I apologize for going there on this post. Please forgive me. Prayers to the family. Jeremiah was a good man.

I've not heard anyone say but if someone was with Brown at the time of the shooting, shouldn't she be facing charges as an accessory or for aiding and abetting? These punk __s thugs running around us have the support of families and friends and I want to let all of those that help these animals have a fair dose of the responsibility for their actions. This guy hasn't been holed up in a cave somewhere while being wanted on multiple charges, he's been going about his life and no doubt interacting with several people. Anyone willing to step up and admit to helping him? Just a thought.

Amen to that statement. Felons are banned from living in public housing. Whoever is living at both of the addresses he lists in Turner "felon acres" Terrace should be evicted tonight. Right now. Throw them and their mess in the skkrreets where they bees belingin'. Seriously, rid the projects of the trash like you get roaches out of a house and you might cut down on some of them. I for one am tired of paying their food, housing and pocket change while they sit and plot all day on who they are going to rob or kill next. And yes, anything in the car with this scum should be in jail as well.
