LUMBERTON — Two funds have been established for donations to help the family of a Lumberton police officer who was shot and killed on Tuesday.

Jeremian Goodson is survived by his wife Lemetria and a young daughter. His wife is expecting the couple’s second child any day now.

Lumberton police Sgt. Burnis Wilkins said a memorial fund has been set up in the name of Lametria Goodson. Donations can be made at any State Employees Credit Union by cash, check or money order.

“The account is set up in her name so she can withdraw as she needs,” said Wilkins, who said he once rented a house to Goodson and his wife. Goodson was 32 years old.

Wilkins said the department has seen an outpouring of support from Robeson County and beyond since Goodson was gunned down, with many people coming to the Police Department to drop off money and goods for Goodson’s fellow officers and his family.

“We’ve got people calling in as far away as Rhode Island,” he said. “… In my 31-year career, this is the second time I’ve had to go through something like this. It’s a great feeling to know there are people in the public that recognize what we go through and more particularly what the family is going through.”

City Councilman John Cantey said he’s established a memorial fund in Goodson’s name. The money will go to Goodson’s family to help cover funeral and other expenses. Colvin Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. The money raised by that fund will be "funneled into" the fund set up by the Police Department, Cantey said, adding that he encourages donors to make their donations to the Police Department's fund at State Employees Credit Union.

“There’s been an abundance of inquiries to where people can donate any type of fund whatsoever,” Cantey said. “The child is going to be born without a father, so if there’s anything we can do as a community to assist them in this troubled time … that’s what we’re trying to do now.”

Cantey said that donations can be made to the Jeremiah Goodson Memorial Fund by going to First South Bank at 3000 N. Elm St. or 600 N. Chestnut St. Donors can also mail their donations to P.O. Box 334, Lumberton, N.C. 28359, c/o John Cantey. Donations will be tax deductible.

Cantey recalled working with Goodson when Goodson was a Public Works employee and later as a police officer.

“Every time I called upon him, he came running,” Cantey said. “… It’s tough when an officer is doing his job and loses his life in the performance of his duties. … God only knows why it went this way, but the Lord — he has a good person guarding the pearly gates up there now. He will be missed.”
