LUMBERTON — A 71-year-old Elizabethtown man and a 24-year-old man from St. Pauls have died in separate accidents on Robeson County roads, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Sergio Estefes, of 572 Howell Road, St. Pauls, died at about noon Sunday when his 2002 Pontiac overturned in a canal, according to an accident report by Trooper Robert Reaves.
The Pontiac ran off the road on U.S. 301 about two miles north of Lumberton, struck a street sign and came to rest upside-down in the canal, according to the report.
Estefes, who was wearing a seat belt, was trapped in the Pontiac and died at the scene, according to the report. Speed was not a factor in the accident, according to the report.
In an unrelated accident, John Karl Starkloff, of 2206 First Ave., Elizabethtown, died Friday at about 2:13 p.m. when the 2011 Chevrolet Impala in which he was riding with his wife and another couple failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection of Ivey and Regan Church roads and collided with a 1994 Chrysler minivan, according to the report by Trooper Robbie Terry.
The van, driven by Sherry Lyn Stewart, 39, of 307 Cricket Hollow Road in Lumberton, was traveling 55 in the 55-mph zone, according to the report. Stewart was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
Starkloff’s wife, 67-year-old Carol Diana Starkloff, who was driving the Impala, was also taken to the medical center along with two passengers, 67-year-old Barbara Douglas and 65-year-old Horace Douglas, of 361 Vath St. in Jackson, N.J., according to the report. Starkloff was later taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, according to the report.
The two Douglases were treated and released from SRMC.
