LUMBERTON — The Public Schools of Robeson County school board will get an update tonight on the results of the annual ABC report schools released by the state earlier this month.

This is the 15th and final time that the state will issue its ABCs of Public Education report on how students performed on end-of-the-year and end-of-course tests taken in grades third through 12th.

According to Bobby Locklear, the LEA accountability director for the Public Schools of Robeson County, 29 of 41 local schools met or exceeded their academic growth expectations. He said that the district had one school, the Early College, that earned the highest recognition for performance, three schools — Lumberton High, Rowland Middle and Tanglewood Elementary — earned the second highest level of recognition, and 25 schools fell into the state’s third and fourth performance rankings. The remaining 12 schools earned “no recognition” because they did not meet state growth expectations.

Robeson County also topped the state’s graduation rate of 80 percent during the past year. Locklear said Robeson County’s rate was 82.6 percent.

The board is also expected tonight to consider renewing its contract with Johnny Hunt, the school’s superintendent. School board Chairman Mike Smith said earlier this month that the major issues that have to be worked out is the length of the contract and salary. Hunt, who makes about $175,000 a year, is in the final year of a three-year contract.

In other business:

— The board will consider a contract for speech therapy services.

— Assistant Superintendent Linda Emanuel will discuss revised report cards.

— Board members will be given an update on Learners to Leaders program.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the school administration building on Caton Road.

The present Screwel Board NEEDS to be "updated on their ABC's". I doubt if you could find more than 2 or 3 of them that KNOW their ABC's.
