LUMBERTON — Southeastern Regional Medical Center is changing its name to Southeastern Health.

During a ceremony held Tuesday in the hospital lobby, the new name — effective Jan. 1 — was announced by Faye Caton, chairman of the medical center’s board of trustees. SRMC President and Chief Executive Officer Joann Anderson joined Caton in unveiling the name, along with the new logo, color and tagline “Better Health — Starting with You.”

The new name, hospital officials say, represents the large range of services that Southeastern provides. Anderson said that the new name will let people in the local community and beyond know that SRMC — an acronym that it will retain — is not just a hospital.

“We want people to know all of the health services we provide,” Anderson said. “We want everybody to know that we provide services ranging from primary medical care to palliative care.”

Caton, who has been a member of SRMC’s Foundation board for 12 year and then a trustee for five years, gave a brief overview of the medical center’s growth during the past 17 years. Included in the long list of achievements was the building of a seven-story bed tower with 168 private rooms with baths; the opening of the Southeastern Heart Center, ranked No. 1 in North Carolina by Health Grades for exceptional care of heart patients; opening of the Gibson Cancer Center; opening of Southeastern Hospice House; and expansion of the Southeastern Lifestyles Fitness Center and Spa. Other examples of growth, Caton said, included the opening of of Southeastern Wound Healing Center; improvements at Woodhaven Nursing, Rehabilitation and Alzheimer’s Care Center; addition of the mobile medical clinic that serves Robeson County; and the addition of a broad range of physician services, including family practice clinics and specialty clinics.

“As you can see,” Caton told the large crowd of SRMC employees, public officials and community members gathered for the announcement, “we are more than a regional medical center. We encompass many facets of health care and our strategic plan for the future of health care for our community is aggressive.

“SRMC is recognized as a leader in modern health care. We are no longer seen as a ‘community’ or a ‘regional’ hospital. We are really focused and positioned to be a full system of providers and specialists that expand beyond a geographical service area.”

Anderson said that the new Southeastern Health is committed to providing the best possible health care available to everyone in the community. She emphasized, however, that it takes individuals and the community in general to produce a truly healthy environment.

“It begins with the individual and takes commitment from everyone in the community,” she said. “We (Southeastern) are committed to partnering with anyone who wants to work with us to provide the best health care to the community… . Keeping health care in the forefront is what it is all about.”

Anderson pledged that Southeastern Health will continue to provide the broad range of services now being provided by Southeastern Regional Medical Center in its four-county service area.

“Services will be of the highest quality for everyone at reasonable cost,” she said.

wolfpak: I can't be a racist, my friend. I'm a MINORITY. I don't claim to be, I don't use it as an excuse when I fail, and I darn sure don't follow some template that I'm to act or say certain things. Nope.. don't do that, sir. I'm what they call an INDIVIDUAL.

Try it for a change, you'll feel free and independent. Ross, an American Expert on race, politics and local Rob Co religion. and I win every time....

@marij7:"....an employee needing psychiatric help....." BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA You reckon South Eastern has many of those kind of employees? What department did she work in, brain surgery? BWAHAHAHAHA You said it all. One of the best posts ever.

Percy and Ross obviously you both have some sort of issues....and I don't have medicaid you ignorant imbeciles. Ross I was not stating that you are white, just slow, and Percy I always read your leftist comments on here as I shake my head and say "He doesn't know any better." I was merely stating that not everyone receives stellar care when they are in SRMC, and my family was just fine before the tangled with SRMC. Yes, Ross, racists can be minorities too, I see it everyday. It's one thing to be racist, you can fix racism, but as Ron White opined, "You can't fix stupid." Percy, there are many employees at SRMC that need psychiatric help, but not everyone has the sense to seek it out. One thing I will agree with you is that it was a great post, it was a true story, truthfully told and well written, something that is hard to find in either the Robesonian or the comment section. Waste of time with people like you two.

cmpunk and marija... Hey both of you stay out of there when you get sick, go somewhere else. The people working there will still get paid the same. Here's some advice to you if you don't like SRMC, make sure you can afford to pay for your care before showing up, they are sick of you medicaid people and non-payers. Go elsewhere with your problems, the hospital would be better off and maybe could lower the costs for the rest of us paying people.

RossisRight, I will gladly stay out of there when I am sick and the rest of my family avoids that cesspool as well. Your comments about Medicaid recipients and non-payers show you are obviously prejudiced against the poor and down-trodden and Medicaid is a form of insurance, you idiot. I mean Robeson County is the poorest County in the state, not everyone is lucky enough to have private insurance or a job for that matter. Are you suggesting that these folks die or suffer simply because of their inability to pay? News flash, Lumbees are not the only ones getting killed within the walls of SRMC, they don’t discriminate, so watch out. That line about the people who work there was dead on because they will get paid the same, but that is the problem. Many of these people are lazy, poorly managed and rude. Don't get me wrong, there are many great people that just happen to work at SRMC, my aunt was one of them and she was the best, until they wouldn’t provide her the care she needed, due to the fact that she was an employee requiring psychiatric treatment. I strongly believe was a factor leading to her untimely death. I am also related to a couple of nurses and doctors who worked there for years. My comment was aimed at the doctors and staff who simply don't give a damn, whether you have insurance or not. I am not inventing an opinion with no merit behind it Brediger, and no, there were no extenuating circumstances that led to the deaths and near deaths of several of my own family members, it was due to shear malpractice and disregard. My maternal grandmothers young son was one of these needless deaths, he was always a sickly child who died at the age of two. Doctor’s were never ‘able’ to figure out what was wrong with him, but years later when my grandmother was hospitalized during an illness, a nurse informed her that she had worked with the doctor during the birth of her now dead son, and the doctor dropped him when he was born. The nurse stated that she was told not to tell my grandmother at the time for fear of the doctor being sued. Another dear uncle of mine was hit by a car and taken to SRMC for surgery on his broken hip. Let me add that he was initially healthy except for the fact that he had bleeding ulcers, which was discovered in his youth at SRMC, so it was in his records. Fast forward to the operating room where Heparin was administered, unbeknownst to him or my family, he was released from the hospital and sent home to recover. Later he was found by my aunt lying in a pool of his own blood, which he had been coughing up due to the ulcers and the fact that his blood had been thinned by the heparin. My paternal grandmother, a 65 year old healthy woman with insurance, is another story which could have been much worse than it turned out to be. She fell into a ditch in her yard and was taken to SRMC for x-rays and an examination. The doctor at the time told her that she had a neck sprain and he sent her home with a flimsy brace. Three days later she was called and told that an ambulance was on its way to pick her up because a radiologist came back to work from his weekend break, and wanted to get another scan of the lady with the broken neck, that was broken in three places. I am sure that he must have been looked at weirdly, because they did not have anyone in the hospital with a broken neck, because she was at home walking around with a cloth brace on unaware that her neck was broken. When she was taken back to SRMC she was placed in a halo, a vice grip halo. The doctor informed us that she could have been paralyzed for life had she moved the wrong way. My own mother and baby brother were also victims of malpractice at this hospital. When my mother was in labor and delivery in active labor, the doctor that was assigned to her was in surgery across the hall. Apparently, no one else was available to deliver my brother so the doctor was called in from his surgery, he did not bother to scrub in or even remove the bloody gloves from the surgery e was performing, before he reached in and removed my baby brother from my mother. She contracted a deadly staph infection and was near death for some time after this incident. Luckily my brother and mother survived this dangerous act. That doctor was never reprimanded for that incident nor was any of the other aforementioned staff. I was a victim of poor treatment and lack of propriety as well at SRMC. Several years ago, I was forced to go to SRMC because I was experiencing a 2nd trimester miscarriage. Believe me when I say, “If I could have made it to another hospital, I would have gone to another hospital.” When I arrived I had to be placed in a wheelchair because I was doubled over in pain and could not walk. I was taken in for vitals and placed back in the waiting room, where within minutes I began hemorrhaging profusely….that means bleeding badly, Brediger and Ross. The friend that had driven me to the SRMC immediately tried to get some assistance to take me to the treatment area, but she was told that I would have to wait because they did not have any beds with stirrups available. I stayed in the waiting room for almost two hours with blood pouring out of me so badly, that they called for housekeeping to clean up the pool that was now beneath me on the floor. I was still not taken to the treatment area, so I had someone call a friend of mine, who was also a much respected doctor at SRMC and he personally came to the emergency room and expedited the process. I truly could have died and beyond that I was utterly humiliated and saddened that I had to endure such treatment during such a personal and heartbreaking experience. I failed to mention that the emergency room was full to capacity that night and many people witnessed this atrocity, with some even pleading with staff on my behalf for me to receive care. I could go on, but my blood begins to boil when I think about the atrocities that I and my family have experienced at this so-called hospital. Before you jump on that “It’s the greatest thing to ever happen to Robeson County” bandwagon, think about the fact that you don’t know everything that goes on behind closed doors. In a county such as ours where so many things have been swept under the rug and covered up, I choose to believe that not everything is as it seems. I’ll let you guys know when I publish my blog, so I can school you on many more topics concerning Robeson County and SRMC. Till then.

Marij... My goodness sweetheart... You and your family are some sick people. You may want to ask, what are yall doing to be so sick and have such bad luck when asking the staff at SRMC to heal and save you. You may want to consider attending churh and asking GOD to help you guys... It's apparent the fine folks at SRMC can't do anything for yall, so next time(and by all the problems yall got, there will be a next time soon) pray to GOD while you get one of your "friends" to drive you to another care facility. And no ma'am.. medicaid is not insurance, it's a welfare freebie payed for by your neighbors and 16 year old kids bagging groceries thru taxation. And if you've been treated rude by the wonderful staff, it's because you mouthed off first to them. You see young lady, their jobs are in such high demand because of extensive training and schools, they are nearly irreplaceable, SO GUESS WHAT? THEY WILL BITE BACK AT SMART MOUTHS... Without fear of loosing their jobs, so BE NICE! You might get away with that at wal-mart, but rude people will not be tolerated there.

PS. and stop assuming I'm white. You don't think minorities can speak their minds without looking thru a set of racial blinders? I toe no mans line. I tell the truth and let the chips fall where they may...

Yall, I have a "race card" stop watch I bought off e-bay, I'm going to start timing every article posted on this site and report how fast RACE will be mentioned by posters on ANY SUBJECT,ANY!

Ross: I don't figure you'll have to worry about "cmpunk" and "marij7" very long. One of those Big Bad 300 pound nurses will throw 'em up against the wall, body slam 'em, and then come off the top rope with a "human canon ball butt drop" and THAT will be the END of THEM. Just watch!!!!!

On another note RossisRight, you are neither an expert nor an individual. Sorry to burst your bubble, but you are what they call 'common'. I am sure that you would love to say that you see the world without 'blinders' of any kind, but you clearly have a skewed view on life and everything in it. I have never used my race as a crutch or an excuse and I don't associate with people who do. I have more intelligence and moral fiber in my pinky finger than you and Percy have in your entire beings. The next time you decide to voice an opinion on subjects that require a thought process higher than a third grade level, don't. It would be a benefit to everyone around you if you would use that wasted air you call speaking and blow it back into the atmosphere. I don't hide behind ignorance and hate fueled mantras and I am disheartened that the two of you do.

New name but can't change the reputation! Hospital still sucks! Go to the ER & it's a 6-12 hour wait even if it's not busy! Doctors don't care! They give you a bandade for a gunshot wound & send you packing! Go to Cape Fear...at least you will see a doctor in less than 6 hours when you go to the ER! New Name won't change a thing! I hope they tear it down & build a bigger mall!

They should name it Southeastern DEATH. So many people go there for minor symptoms and never make it out of there. The families are told that they caught a virus, caught pneumonia, staff infection, and end up DEAD! I personally know of 4 differnet people that went in for minor surgey that ended up DEAD! The doctor nicked the small bowl on one, which led toseptic poisoning of the body. One died after a hernia operation. Another from a cathetar procedure! I am beginning to wonder if there is someone there killing people like an Angel of Death. I wish someone would check the records over the last 10 years to see the amount of undetermined deaths from this place!

I get so tired of people on here bashing the hospital. The reason that people die is because they don't take care of their own health. If a person passes from a minor procedure I would bet that they have tons of other health issues caused by not exercising, smoking, eating poorly and being obese. If you are train wreck when you enter the hospital you have a much higher risk of having a problem no matter what the procedure. SRMC is a great hospital with caring staff, and top notch physicians who's main concern is the health of our community. So get yourself a spell checker(bowel, catheter, staph), go for a run or walk, eat a salad and and be glad we have SRMC in our community.

They should have named it Southeastern Death House. The only reason this hospital is still open is because most of the people that they kill are poor Lumbees who are often uninformed and unable to sue.

@marij7: Why don't you tell that to one of those big 300-pound she-male nurses next time you run into one? But I'd sell tickets first, if I were you. At least your survivors will have something to remember you by.
