LUMBERTON — Las Amigas, Inc., will host the Miss Orchid Pageant this weekend at Lumberton Junior High School at 7 p.m. Saturday. The pageant is a fundraiser for the non-profit community service organization.

Members of the organization, with the permission of their parents, are presented, introduced, perform a talent and are presented in evening wear. Raffle tickets sold at the event raise funds for Las Amigas, which sponsors workshops designed to empower young women.

The organization has 26 chapters, mostly on the east coast and started in Charlotte in 1957. The Lumberton chapter is relatively new, starting in September of last year.

Of the 46 young women who participate in Las Amigas, 13 of them decided to participate in the pageant this weekend, where the theme will be “Wishing upon a star.”

Participants sold candy and solicited donations to raise money for the group. They also helped out with some community service events like traveling to a nursing home at Christmas time to sing carols and give away socks.

The event will raise money for the North Carolina Heart Association, Operation Sickle Cell, American Cancer Society and the Lupus Foundation.

Admission to the event is free. For information, call (910) 844-3685.
