BOSTON — Fairmont native William McGirt has gotten off to a solid start in his quest to better position himself in the FedEx Cup playoffs.
McGirt had five birdies and three bogeys for an opening-round 2-under-par 69 in the Deutsche Bank Classic being played on the TPC Boston course. That put him in a tied for 18th place with much of the field still on the course.
Tiger Woods, who had six consecutive birdies, and Jeff Overton were tied for the lead at 7-under-par 64.
Beginning play on No. 1, McGirt was 3 under and tied for first place after 11 holes, but had bogeys on Nos. 12, 16 and 17 and birdies on 15 and 18.
McGirt began the day’s play in 46th place on the FedEx Cup standings. The top 70 players in the standing advance to next week’s BMW Championship, the third leg of the four-tournament playoffs.
McGirt tees off at 12:34 p.m. today on No. 10.
