PEMBROKE — Some local American Indian farmers and ranchers are receiving almost $2 million in payments in a settlement with the U.S. government.

On Friday, 19 American Indian farmers and ranchers from Robeson County each received settlement checks of $50,000 from the Keepseagle v. Vislack discrimination case. The national class action suit between American Indians and the U.S. Department of Agriculture has been settled at a cost of $760 million and payments are finally reaching those eligible for compensation.

The lawsuit claimed that the U.S. Department of Agriculture discriminated against American Indians by denying them access to credit in the USDA Farm Program. The suit also claimed that the USDA denied thousands of American Indian farmers and ranchers the same opportunities to get farm loans or farm services that were given to white farmers and ranchers.

According to plaintiffs in the case, the USDA didn’t do outreach to American Indian farmers and ranchers to provide them with the technical assistance they needed to prepare applications for loans or loan services.

Beverly Collins-Hall, with American Indian Mothers Inc., said that those county residents receiving settlements on Friday received help in filing their applications from that organization. Each will receive $50,000, she said.

“Two million is a lot of money coming into this county,” said Hall. “Some of those receiving settlement checks have never seen as much as $50,000 at one time.”

The checks were presented to the recipients by Rosalind Gray, an attorney for the American Indian Mothers, Friday morning during a gathering at the North Carolina Indian Cultural Center, just outside of Pembroke.

Hall said that she has been working with the USDA for several years on issues related to American Indians.

Ji2gaman: The statement "God is watching you" is.. well, self explanitory. Don't you think so? It doesn't get any plainer than that. He's watching men(lumbee men) take other mens(mostly white) hard earned mpney for something they had nothing to do with. How many years ago did this SUPPOSEDLY happen? The one's paying for it now didn't have anything to do with it, so this money is "ill-gotten". Stolen. Period.

PS, God is watching all this racial stuff and he's not very happy with lumbee's. He will not judge you on your RACE, but your heart....

How's that? You understand now?

Well, well... what do we have here but another way to keep people against one another along RACIAL lines. That's right, taking money from a perception of one race(most minorities think government money comes from the white man) and give to a down trodden minority race of people and there you have it. It ticks off whites and makes the hatred from minorities even stronger, cause now they can say "see, see, it's true they hate us, even the government says so"... Boy, how I was raised is so different than the way these(indians) people were raised. I was taught to not take anything that didn't belong to me, they apparantly will. There is no excuse, this is wrong. Maybe they didn't get the loan back then because their credit was bad, but if you are a minority you can sue.

This is why the Country went into a depression, because banks were forced to loan money to people with bad credit, MOST were MINORITIES who couldn't pay it back, thats's a fact look it up.

I'm so sick of people believing they have an unfair playing field simply because they are a minority, me and my wife are "so-called" minorities too(so what) but we don't whine when something doesn't go our way. Maybe all minorities should try it once in a while, you'll feel better. Whites are not racists, it's the minority race that continues to think this and it's untrue. Get out and away from you're own race of people and see for yourself. Racism is a thing of the past, except for minorities who still are very much racist.

So, you people who got somebody elses money last week, I hope you're happy, but just remember, GOD IS WATCHING YOU. Ask HIM does that money really belong to you.......

I am an educated Lumbee woman. I have friends from all backgrounds and ethniticies. I was raised in Robeson County and although I don't think all Whites are racist, racism does still exist in Robeson County and elsewhere. Its not a problem that older people have experienced. Even young professionals have dealt with it. Generally, no one knows I'm Lumbee unless they see my last name. Even then, outsiders don't know unless I tell them. I've heard officer's at the local DMV refer to Robeson County as wahoo land. I've heard college friends forget I was Lumbee and talk about how they wouldn't date outside their race. I've heard professionals I worked with in Whiteville reference Indians as "I'm not one of those people". I've heard federal workers in Supervisory positions refer to workers as "Engines". This was not the 1960's. This has been within the last 20 years. The "Engines" comment was within the last 6 months. My family and I have worked for everything we have. I worked on a federal reservation and I'm glad the Lumbee people were never given land and free health care. I hope we never get a casino. I think being who we are has made us stronger. But, I will never say racism doesn't exist. These farmers were denied help in the 1980s simply because they were Indian. They didn't have bad credit. They were given loans but at high rates than non-minority borrowers. So, while I sympathize with what you have experienced, keeping quiet about racism helps no one. No matter who it affects, its not right.

ReallyRobeson-Great comment but we both know it's bull! People are not working to get rid of the unfair advantages in this county they are working to get more advantages. Racism is stronger than ever. Why we have computer labs in schools that only Indian kids can use. Have you tried to fix that WRONG. I should get $50,000 because my kid has been and still is discriminated against.

Hey duckb52. Believe me when I say I'm with you. I don't under any explanation agree with policies that allow some to use equipment while others cannot. I'm just naive enough to believe that as we've let things get like they are, we apparently have the ability to correct them if we make our judgements, especially those made on election days, about what is best for Robeson not what's best for a subset of Robesonians. The strange thing is that there are typically way more of us who don't decide things based on race than there are those who do. Our downfall is that we're not as vocal...I say let's pump up the volume by shining spotlights on these dealmakers cause cockroaches run for cover when the lights come on whether they're in White homes,Indian homes Or Black homes.

Ducks52..I haven't seen any school that has labs just for Indians. Anytime you make a comment like that you need the facts to back it up. Sounds like MSNBC they make comments about republicans and don't show the facts to back it. It's just hear say.

duck, you may not remember but several years ago before the state took over our schools, the Lumbees had more schools in Robeson County than any other race, we raised money to get so many schools, even UNCP-Pembroke, and we were made to share them with all the other races, thank the government for taking them away from us and letting you borrow them. It was always the Indians sharecropping for the white man, we almost starved because they cheated us out of our money when crops was sold, but Jesus Christ the SON of GOD still provided for us, $50,000 is not enough to pay us back for all the white crooks that cheated us, just a pay back from white landlords, thank God we don't have to work for you anymore cheaters, whey you steal 1 you reap 10 fold, thats Bible

Bosom....i am 36 years old...my hard earned dollars fund these "reparations" for past transgressions by the white man...seeing as how i was born in 1976 and couldnt have had anyone working for me, explain to me how this is right or fair? Is this a "children paying for the sins of their fathers deal"? My father was in the army, not paying sharecroppers to farm...people seem to lose sight of the fact that any monies payed are coming from the pockets of the very people struggling to get by....Yay, 19 families got 50k...so we have 15 new doublewides and some new cars...what did it accomplish? You cant get retribution for past transgressions from dead people....you can only work to erase the divisions in humanity for the future generations...

You are right. Racism is strong than ever. I guess it disturbs you that a "Native American" got a small check. Your government won't lose anything. They will tax the 50,000 out the gate. Then tax again when they file their returns. It doesn't concern you or me. You don't say anything about your government forgiving other countries that owe them billions.

I wish we had our own school system like before. Then your kids wouldn't have anything to complain about. Maybe you would like white only bathrooms, water fountains, lunch rooms? Remember we did land on plymouth rock, plymouth rock landed on us!

Sounds like the American Indian version of the Pigford case. That $2,000,000 coming into the county didn't fall out of the sky. It comes from the pocket of taxpayers and/or China. The shell game the government plays with our money makes me sick.

lighterknot, So true. Discrimination is nothing more than treating someone unfairly based on some subjective criteria such as race, gender, religion or any other subjective reason. The undisputed reality is that in the past more so than the present, some groups of people had less opportunity available to them than others did. If you're a racing fan consider that it could be compared to a race where it is discovered in the middle of the race that the leader is out in front of everyone else by 5 laps only because he's been cheating and using illegal equipment. Now I wouldn't want him to be disqualified so that he can't finish the race but I would want his unfair advantage erased and for him to finish the race in whatever postion competing fairly places him, either first or last. Most minorities don't want handouts but we would like the playing field leveled so that we can succeed or fail based on fairness and our abilities not because someone else has cheated and wound up in front. Let's work toward getting rid of all the unfair advantages no matter how they're given.
