Staff report

LUMBERTON — A 50-year-old nursing student died Wednesday afternoon when her sports utility vehicle slammed head-on into another SUV on Prospect Road, injuring two Pembroke women and 6-year-old twins, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Diane Elizabeth Castellanos, of 289 Long Leaf Drive, West End, died at about 1:57 p.m. when her 2004 Honda ran off the road to the right and she over-corrected, crossed the center line and struck a 2004 Ford SUV driven by Millie Hammonds Jacobs, 63, of the 500 block of Fourth Street in Pembroke, according to the accident report by Trooper M.J. Miles.

Jacobs was transported by helicopter to UNC Hospitals along with 6-year-old Lillie Goins, of the 3000 block of Prospect Road, who was a passenger in her vehicle. Their conditions were unavailable this morning.

Two other passengers in Jacobs’ vehicle, 6-year-old London Goins and a 20-year-old, Christian Goins, were taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where they have been treated and released, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Castellanos, who was not wearing a seat-belt, was traveling 55 mph in the 55-mph zone, according to the report.
