SOUTHERN PINES — Facing the reigning league champs, the Lumberton boys soccer team couldn’t keep up with Pinecrest, falling 3-0 in a Southeastern Conference opener in Southern Pines.

“They’re always the team to beat until somebody knocks them off that perch,” Lumberton head coach Kenny Simmons said. “They lost quite a bit from last year, they’re in rebuilding mode a little bit but still very talented.”

Lumberton (3-5, 0-1) nearly scored early in the first half when Ryan Musselwhite’s shot from 20 yards out appeared bound for the goal before Pinecrest goalie Garrett Melia made an athletic save. Fifteen minutes later, the Patriots (3-1-1, 1-0) lit the scoreboard to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

“The complexity of the game changed after that and we never recovered,” Simmons said.

Pinecrest’s Hayden Little scored two goals and Jake Harbeck added a third. Lumberton goalie Thomas Bailey made seven saves in net. Melia had four in the shutout.
