Learning to read begins before children start school. Young children need to develop important language and literacy skills before they can actually learn to read.
Parents and other caregivers can start helping their children develop these skills now. The Every Child Ready to Read workshop series from Robeson County Public Library demonstrates how parents can use five familiar and easy-to-use practices to develop language and other early literacy skills in children from birth to age 5.
Every Child Ready to Read workshops are scheduled for Oct. 11, Nov. 8, and Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. at the Robeson County’s main branch in Lumberton. Workshops are free and registration is required. To register, visit or call the Lumberton library at 910-738-4859.

Teen Read Week, an initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association, encourages teens to read for the fun of it. Teen Read Week is from Oct. 14 to Oct. 20 and the Robeson County Public Library is celebrating by hosting a teen book review raffle drawing.
During Teen Read Week, teens are challenged to read and review a book of their choice. Book review slips will be available at all libraries. Turn in a completed book review slip by Oct. 19 for a chance to win an “I Love Books” library bag.
Teens are also invited to “Storm the Castle” by using miniature catapults they will learn how to build with simple office supplies. The “Storm the Castle” program is Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. in the Osterneck Auditorium.
The library will host the Book ‘Em North Carolina 2013 Short Story Contest. The contest is open to all youths in Robeson County and begins on Oct. 1. The deadline for the short story submissions is Dec. 7. The theme is “The Power of Inspiration” and youths may pick up contest guidelines sheet from any library location or access it from the children’s page of the library’s website.
Costume contests, pumpkin bowling, broomstick limbo and a “monster march” must mean that it is almost time for a Halloween party.
Children, teens, and their families are invited to a Spooktacular Halloween Party on Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. at the Osterneck Auditorium. Come dressed in your favorite costume for a chance to win your own pumpkin.
The McMillan Memorial Library in Red Springs will show “The Lorax” movie on Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. The show is free and children are welcome to attend.
The Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale is scheduled for Oct.11 to Oct. 13. The sale will be held in the Osterneck Auditorium. Plan on visiting the sale early for the best selections.
Story times for Fairmont, Rowland, and Lumberton that were scheduled for Thursday and Friday and Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 have been cancelled so that I may attend the Association for Rural & Small Libraries Conference in Raleigh and a family wedding. I apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to resuming the Fairmont, Rowland and Lumberton story times the following week. The Pembroke, St. Pauls, Red Springs and Maxton story times will be held at their regular times.
Whether you need to sign up for a library card, use the computer, check out books and DVDS, find a place to study or attend a program, make plans to visit your library. You’ll be glad you did. Have a safe week.
