The company that Obama keeps

Nowhere is the contrast between Barack Obama, as defined by his rhetoric (“Obama 1”) and Barack Obama as defined by his actions (“Obama 2”), greater than in his foreign policy — and especially his policy toward Israel.

What if we put aside Barack Obama’s rhetoric, and instead look exclusively at his documented record over a period of decades, up to and including the present?

The first thing that is most striking about that record is the long string of his mentors and allies who were marked by hatred of the United States, and a vision of the world in which the white, Western nations have become prosperous by oppressing and exploiting the non-white, non-Western nations.

The person most people have heard of who matched that description has been Jeremiah Wright, whose church Barack Obama attended for 20 years, and was still attending when he began his campaign for the presidency. But Jeremiah Wright was just one in a series of mentors and allies with a similar vision and a similar visceral hostility to the West.

Barack Obama was virtually marinated in that vision from childhood. His mother clashed with her Indonesian husband when he began to move away from his earlier anti-Western radicalism and to work with Western businesses investing in Indonesia.

As a counterweight to whatever ideological influence her Indonesian husband might have on her son, she extolled the virtues of his absent Kenyan father, who remained a doctrinaire, anti-Western socialist to the end.

After Barack Obama was sent back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents at age 10, his grandfather introduced him to a black man named Frank Marshall Davis, who had a long career of anti-American, anti-white propaganda that included a stint as a member of the Communist Party. Davis was Obama’s mentor on race throughout his adolescent years, until Obama left for college.

The progression of such mentors and like-minded contemporaries continued as Obama went through Occidental College, Columbia University and the Harvard Law School.

These included Professor Edward Said at Columbia, a spokesman for Palestinian terrorists, and Professor Derrick Bell at the Harvard Law School. Bell was an advocate of so-called “critical race theory” — an uncritical mishmash of notions by a man who said that he saw his role as deliberately annoying white people. Barack Obama literally embraced Professor Bell at a public gathering.

After Obama went out into the world and worked for a time in a private business, he regarded himself as being, in his own words, “a spy behind enemy lines.”

Later, when he began his political career by running for state office in Illinois, his campaign began with a fundraiser in the home of Bill Ayers, who had been a domestic terrorist who planted bombs in public places, including the Pentagon.

When this association was later revealed, Obama said that he was still a child during Ayers’ years as a terrorist. But Obama was by no means still a child when Ayers defended his years of terrorism in a statement that appeared in the New York Times — ironically, on Sept. 11, 2001.

This is not the Barack Obama that most voters saw and elected president of the United States in 2008. What they saw was a carefully crafted image of a bright, articulate, energetic and genial fellow who would heal our racial and partisan divides. His likability was high and remained so, even after many became disappointed with his policies.

His geniality has carried him over many rough spots. But have you ever heard of a grumpy confidence man? Geniality is a prerequisite for the job.

What many regard as a failure of Obama’s foreign policy, especially in the Middle East, may well be one of his biggest successes. His desire to redistribute wealth domestically is part of a larger ideological vision that includes a redistribution of power internationally.

Obama has long said that the United States plays too large a role internationally. His policies suggest that Islamic countries need a larger role. The troubling question is whether he still sees his own role as “a spy behind enemy lines” in the White House.

43 Presidents were voted on because they were white. I voted on some of them, based on how I felt they would benefit the country. Nothing has changed and as far as the 97 percent of blacks who voted for Obama because he is black, there are as many whites who aren't voting for him because he is black. Therefore, you can't point fingers without some pointing back at you. If you don't like minorities (black, native americans, others) that's cool, WE BUILT THIS COUNTRY, contrary to what Romney/Ryan would have you believe. From the Native founders, to the African American slaves/inventors. WE BUILT THIS, WE BUILT THIS, WE BUILT THIS, WE BUILT THIS. The first will be last, and the last will be first. If you notice, the more this man is scandalized, the more the polls favor him. It happened with McCain and appears the same is happening with Romney (verdict still out). If, there wasn't so much hate towards this President he may not be in the position he is in. Remember you are suppose to love everyone. Anyone who believes Racism is gone, is only fooling themselves. Ross you of all people should be the last to say it's gone. All your post have something to do with race. But since you say it's gone I will apologize and not fight the fight on here anymore. Funny thing is, you said "YOU PEOPLE" as if blacks are from another planet. But racism is finish. LOL

I'm confused by your comment.

First, you claim that the first 43 Presidents were voted for/elected because they were white. This isn't possible to prove because there wasn't a non-white choice. Then, you go on to say that you yourself voted for some of them, and it had nothing to do with the shade of their skin. So, apparently, they weren't all elected because they were white.

Second, while 97% of blacks voted for Obama, surely not all of them voted for him simply because of the color of his skin. 95% of blacks typically vote Democrat anyway, so it's more reasonable to assume that only 2-4% voted for him strictly because of his skin color. It would also be difficult to quantify the number of whites who did not vote for Obama because of his skin color. It could be 2-4% or even higher, but it obviously wasn't high enough for him to lose (just like the number of blacks voting on the basis of race wasn't the reason he won).

Third, you claim that Romney/Ryan want people to believe that minorities had no role in the building of this nation. Where are you getting that idea from? Their whole campaign has been centered around the greatness of Americans who have built this country by their own blood, sweat, and tears rather than crediting the benevolence of government.

Lastly, I'm not sure where you're going with "If there wasn't so much hate towards this President, then he may not be in the position he is in. Remember, you are supposed to love everyone." Are you saying that negative view many hold of Obama is the reason why he polls well? That would be difficult to prove. He's always had good likability numbers even when his disapproval numbers on the wars/economy are not. As for loving everyone, it is possible to love someone as a human being and completely disagree with every one of their positions, policies, and viewpoints.

If you're wondering who "you people" are, it's the one's YOU refer to as "we, us, and our"..... If you claim it to be yours, we'll refer to them as yours. Simple......

Mr. So-Well,

Do you think for a moment that President Obama's background went unchecked. PLEASE, he is the first black president of the United States (thanks impart to a portion of white america). There is no way he could've got that office being black without being studied, researched, investigated, re-studied, re-researched, and re-investigated. The birther issue would've been proven without a doubt. Heck, Donald Trump would have paid someone to prove his theory, but of course there is none to prove. As far as Jeremiah Wright, there's no proof Obama was in the audience during his infamous sermon. Heck, there are many republicans who are now denouncing Romney, for statements he made. If the proof was there, this man would not have made President. There are too many power brokers who would have assured it. Move on, he was elected by the people who heard all this before. It wasn't a secret, it was lies. The people saw it for what it was. Romney, makes trade deals with the very country who is stealing jobs from America. My fault, Romney is the one who sent those jobs to China. It's amazing what one little video will do. Un-American is when you make money in America and hide it in off shore banks, and then have the audacity to talk about those who work their a's off and say they don't contribute to society... And to all those who will comment after this have your day. I'm done with this crap. Fact of the matter is, u call him all these other names cause you don't have the testicular fortitude to call him what you really want to. Cause if you did, all hell would break loose. Fear of a black man, still exist, so Mr. So-well there will never be racial harmony until that thinking is gone. And I still stand by content of ones character rather than color of skin. I waiting for you Ross, but you want get a response.

Most people who voted for Obama were and still are completely ignorant of his past. You speak of lies but list none. Which part of this column is a lie? You speak of judging a man by his character, and this article only mentions his actions and associations. The only one to mention the color of his skin is you. But since you brought it up, Thomas Sowell is black (in case that matters to you in spite of what you say). He's also one of the greatest economists of the last century.

Yeah, 97 percent of blacks voted for him.... I guess it was his character. If 97 percent of whites vote for Romney all hell will break loose. Until you people get over racism it's never gonna end for you. Everybody else, especially the whites, have moved past it, time for yall to move forward and forget about the past..... It's over, doesn't exist in other communities, except yours.

Ps. Remember this old saying: "if you go looking for trouble you will find it"?... Well the same thing goes for racists, if you'll get the chip off your shoulder and stop looking under rocks for it you'll feel better.......
