GPAC to feature eclectic selection of performances for 37th annual series

PEMBROKE — Givens Performing Arts Center’s 37th year features an with an eclectic selection of performances, with everything from Broadway hits to classic beach to Motown.

The Broadway and More Series, which kicked off Friday with “Smokey Joe’s Cafe,” also includes a tribute to rhythm and blues with an evening of soul with Clarence Carter, Percy Sledge and Roy C, legends of American music.

The National Circus of the People’s Republic of China brings Cirque Chinois to the GPAC stage for the first time with a flying trapeze, contortionist and all the acts which kicked off the Cirque genre.

Cherish the Ladies: A Celtic Christmas, an Irish-American Celtic music group, will bring in the holidays in November.

For those who like their funny bone tickled, this season has comedy at its best with Monty Python’s “Spamalot.”

In the spring, the bands Jim Quick and Coastline, Robert Lee Smith and The Original Tams and The Embers will usher in summer with an evening of beach music.

The Midtown Men bring back classic Broadway with the cast from the “Jersey Boys,” and the season concludes with Russian National Ballet’s “Swan Lake” and the dramatic play, “Of Mice and Men” by the Acting Company.

Special events

GPAC welcomes the country music sensation Gloriana to the stage in October in the Special Events Series. Gloriana will stop by Pembroke during their promotional tour for their second album, “A Thousand Miles Left Behind.”

GPAC welcomes in the New Year with a look at American Indian culture with The River People Music and Culture Fest in January, a two-day festival that will include American Indian music, dancers, storytellers and artisans.
