LUMBERTON — A Tennessee-based farm retail store plans to begin construction on a 19,097-square-foot building this week on the west side of Interstate 95 in Lumberton.
Rob Hoskins, a spokesman for Tractor Supply Company, said the store is tentatively scheduled to open on Feb. 23, 2013, just off Lackey Street
The company offers agricultural, lawn and garden, and animal care products. Hoskins said 12 to 17 full- and part-time jobs will be created when the store opens. Tractor Supply Company is the largest retail farm and ranch store in the U.S., operating over 1,130 stores in 45 states.
“As a growth-minded company, Tractor Supply Company is always looking for potential new store locations that are a good fit as far as the target market is concerned,” Hoskins said. “Concerning the location in Lumberton, this is especially true in that the area was attractive due to the part-time and hobby farmers, and horse owners in the area.”
Lumberton City Manager T. Wayne Horne said Tractor Supply Company has confidence in the community and the new store is a boost for the local economy
“We’re pleased to have new business in the community that’s going to create jobs, opportunities and services,” Horne said. “Anytime you have a new business it helps the local economy, it creates jobs and investment in the community.”
Tractor Supply Company opened its first North Carolina store in 1994. It has more than 50 stores in the state, according to their website. The closest current locations to Robeson County are in Whiteville, Elizabethtown, Fayetteville, Laurinburg and Clinton.
The company began as a mail-order tractor parts business in 1938, and opened its first retail store in 1939 in South Dakota, according to their website.
