PEMBROKE — A plan for the relocation of the Family Dollar Store to the corner of Jones and Third streets was approved unanimously at Monday night’s meeting of the town Board of Commissioners.

The board did require that the store submit a landscaping plan and obtain a storm-water permit.

The new location would replace the current Family Dollar, located in the Piggly Wiggly shopping center at 430 E. Third St, according to Town Manager Oryan Lowry.

Landon Holland, of Holland Consulting Planners in Wilmington, spoke for the Pembroke Planning Board. He said that one of the board’s concerns about the new location was keeping traffic flowing on a congested street.

“Obviously traffic is bad, and adding load to that intersection would only make it worse, but we cannot prevent someone from building on the site,” he said.

Holland said that Planning Board’s recommendation to the business was to create a “right-in, right-out situation,” where an island would be placed on Jones Street that would prevent people from turning left out of the business and entering the intersection.

Also on Monday, the board:

— Appointed Janice Hunt to the ABC Board.

— Heard from Johnny Ozuna, who withdrew his request to place a tattoo parlor at 508 E. Third St. after hearing concerns from the Planning Board about lack of parking at the location.

— Approved a $900 amendment to a Community Development Block Grant for consulting services on an “Our House” Project” on Waddell Drive.

— Heard from April Locklear, of the transfer transition office at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She asked the board’s help in creating a better relationship between residents of Pembroke and students at the university.

— Set a public hearing for Nov. 5 to consider a request by town resident Mable Jones to rezone her single-family home to a multi-family home.

— Approved a $435,506 bid for sewer system rehabilitation from AC Schultes of Carolina Inc., of Wallace. The project is funded in part with a grant by the Clean Water Act.

— Heard from Donique Boyd, of the Department of Transportation, who presented a draft of the Comprehensive Transportation Plan. The plan, when completed, will make provisions for rail, vehicle, pedestrian, public transportation and bicycle traffic for the town through 2040.

— Announced that the Veterans Day Parade would be held on Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. and set the Twilight Christmas Parade for Dec. 6 at 4:30 p.m.
