The junior Johnson’s hat-trick anchored the Pirates on their Senior Night, as the win over the Scots put a stamp on Lumberton’s regular-season schedule at home. The Pirates travel to Pembroke on Wednesday to face Purnell Swett in a regular season finale. The SEC tournament will begin next week.
“It was a huge game as far as conference tournament seeding goes,” Lumberton head coach Kenny Simmons said. “This gives us a firm hold on second place in the SEC.”
Lumberton (11-8-1, 6-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime on Scotland (3-13, 2-7) behind a pair of goals from Johnson, with assists coming from Miguel Bello and Arash Hosseni.
“I thought our possession of the ball in the passing game was key,” Simmons said. “We’ve been stressing that here lately. I thought that opened things up for us and enabled us to have some of the good scoring chances — we had some nice goals last night.”
Hosseni and Bello joined the scoring mix in the second half while Johnson rounded out his hat-trick and added an assist on Hosseni’s score. In the half, Hosseni notched his second assist and Lewis Watkins distributed one, as well.
The Pirates secured the shutout behind goalkeepers Pablo Lozano and Thomas Bailey who combined for four saves.
