Lumberton

William Alfred Tyner, 82, of Lumberton, passed away Nov. 6, 2012, at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton.

The funeral will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Raft Swamp Baptist Church, the Revs. Mark Hall, Johnny Bruce and Dr. Wayne C. Tyner officiating. Burial will be private.

He was born on April 28, 1930, in Mecklenburg County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired employee of the state Department of Transportation. He was also a lifelong member and trustee of Raft Swamp Baptist Church in Lumberton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Berry Tyner and Beulah Stone Tyner McLeod; his birth mother, Flo Smith McCurdy; and a sister, Carolyn Bentley.

Tyner is survived by his wife of 57 years, Catherine Odum Tyner of the home; two daughters, Denise Townsend and husband Billy and Dera Lynn Bledsoe and husband Mack, all of Lumberton; a son, William Mark Tyner and wife Sharon of Lumberton; three sisters, Phyllis Douglas and Kathryn McCurdy, both of Taylorsville, Pat Patterson of Statesville; two grandsons, William Blake Townsend and wife Maureen and Judson Bledsoe, all of Lumberton; a granddaughter, Stephanie Jones and husband Guy of Lumberton; and a great-granddaughter, Allyssa Blakelynn Townsend.

The visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory Inc.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Raft Swamp Baptist Church, 590 Caton Road, Lumberton, N.C., 28360.
