Newspaper cracks down on racial comments

LUMBERTON — Effective immediately, The Robesonian newspaper will no longer allow comments that are racial on stories that do not have a racial element that have been posted on the newspaper’s website at robesonian.com.

“This is something we have thought about for a while, but recently it’s become clear that we need to crack down,” said Donnie Douglas, the editor of the newspaper. “Unfortunately, we have a few people who comment regularly who turn everything into a racial issue. That just seems to create a feeding frenzy.”

The newspaper will allow racial comments on story that have a racial element, according to Douglas, but they must be in good taste and pertinent to the story.

“I have spoken with other editors and this problem doesn’t seem to exist elsewhere,” Douglas said. “I can only guess that it is a result of our tri-racial community and our problem with poverty, which seems to create a lot of finger-pointing.”

Douglas said that other steps are possible for people who continue to offend, including banning them from making comments.

“Obviously, that would be a last resort, but if they can’t play by the rules, that could be a course of action,” he said.

The problem has escalated in recent weeks, leading to a number of complaints to the newspaper, in phone calls, emails and through the website itself, which encourages people to report comments that are in poor taste.

“While we were moving in this direction, the complaints sped it up,” Douglas said. “I want to thank those who pushed for change.

“We understand our obligation to report the news, but we are not obligated to provide a forum for bigotry and hatred. We are a member of this community, and allowing this kind of divisiveness does not benefit anyone. It certainly doesn’t elevate the conversation.”

I really don't see why comments are being posted by the likes of RossisRight, when my comment was not posted. I did not say anything along a racial line, yet I did offer criticism towards the Robesonian itself, therefore I was censored/deleted. It is a shame that people cannot voice oppinions that are contrary to other's opinions without some people taking offense. What I said must have had some truth to it, otherwise it would have been published. I have always suspected that someone close to the Robesonian was RossisRight and PercyKution. I guess it must be true. Furthermore, I would like to have my comment emailed to me as I do not have a copy, so that I may find another avenue for my post.

Repost your criticism. We publish criticism of the paper all the time. I must have missed it.

I don't know Ross or Percy Kution.

No Mr Douglas the sad thing, is the racial comments have grown because you as editor has allowed it. The Robesonian don't need to crack down on "stories that have a racial element" it should not allow them at all. Robeson County is blessed with some of the smartest, educated people anywhere, if we pulled together I can only image what could be accomplished, we could move from one of the poorest counties to one of the richest, the resources are at our finger tips and we need to realize it start moving in a new direction.

I appreciate this change, thank you editor. There are ways to express your opinion without bashing ones race or social status. It appears that some people have chosen the comments section as an open forum to promote hate.

I appreciate this change. There are ways to express your opinion about something without bashing a persons race or social class. Seems some people have chosen the comments section as an open forum to promote hate. I certainly hope it stops these people.

I have put several comments on this site in retaliation of ignorance posted by others, and have tried to stress the importance of looking at the content of ones character, rather than the color of their skin. That's why I respect comments like TravestyofJustice made acknowledging that all races pretty much face similar issues and the only way they can be solved is by working together. Thanks Mr. Editor for putting a stop to the racial comments. It was long overdue.

I think it is great that your are cracking down on name calling or degrading someone because of race. We all can make honest intelligent comments without mentioning race.

I can appreciate the fact that the paper is taking a stance on racial comments. I do hope however that disdain for an idiotic class is not misrepresented as racism. Case in point, these "wanna-be" plugs, or is that thugs walking around with their underwear showing. This is not a racial thing as it can very easily be witnessed by all 3 races in this tri-racial county. I truly hope that when comments are made toward one of these "geniuses" it will not be blocked because of the color of their skin, but be allowed for the lack of character in their being. Just saying...

Just disable the ability to post a comment all together. I don't see where the comments are conducive to the articles/journalism or has any practical relevance. Most are just gossip and name calling. Just report the news!

You just don't like what is said.

Instead of taking something away from all, cause YOU don't like it, why don't YOU just ignore it and leave others alone... Typical democrat, if they don't like something, they want to ban it for everyone.....

While I can understand where the Robesonian is coming from I have to question their dedication to freedom of speech. While I have noticed an overabundance of racial comments on stories not pertaining to race what I have not seen is how anyones racial comments have a negative impact on people. They are comments, opinions, and personal feelings of the writer that are meant to provoke a response both positive and negative. This is what the comments section is for. How about instead of ip address blocking you try restructuring your site so that people have to click a link to get to the comments accompanied by a disclaimer that absolves you from responsibility for the idiotic ramblings of a few and you (robesonian) will still be a champion of free speech and can still provide a forum that allows people to disagree in a peaceful matter. (Something we need more of in Robeson county)

Orihawk

The Robesonian isn't the government, and cannot censure. This is widely confused. This is not a freedom of speech issue. The newspaper is not obligated to provide anyone a forum for their views, although we like to do so. That courtesy will not longer extend to people to come on here to express their bigotry and hatred.

We are comfortable with our decision. People who come on here and offer thoughtful comments will h ave not problem be published.

This is a good idea but evidently you have not researched the Information Technology side of this problem due to the fact without IP address monitoring you will not be able to stop people from creating 100 name’s or aliases. Which will make some even try harder to post racial content. The only other way is to monitor this activity 24-7 days a week and the cost and overhead will not be a sound financial investment.

Punchobama,

I or someone else monitors throughout the day and night. I am told we have technology to ban people through IP addresses, but if we can't, no matter, the comments will go into the trashcan.

Why now? The Robesonian has always approved these types of comments. Three years plus of it going on and now all of sudden you all do something about it?
