LUMBERTON — Police are looking for the person who set a fire on Sunday that killed a horse and destroyed a barn.
The fire at Robert Oxendine’s home at 598 Lumbee Ave. happened at about 5:50 p.m., according to sheriff’s Lt. Brian Duckworth.
Duckworth said gunshots were reported coming from the backyard of Oxendine’s home and then a blaze was seen coming from the 20-by-24-foot barn and 18-foot horse shelter.
Raft Swamp and Deep Branch fire departments responded and extinguished the fire after a nearly two-hour fight, according to Duckworth. Duckworth said police don’t know if the 3-year-old horse was shot or died in the fire.
Duckworth said damage to the building is estimated at $3,000 and he said the horse was valued at $3,000.
