ST. PAULS — An argument on Monday among loggers resulted in gunfire, an assault with a vehicle, and two people in a hospital, according to sheriff’s Maj. Howard Branch. No one has been charged, but Branch said that is likely to happen.

Just after 12:30 p.m. in a field near Tolar Road, four men were cutting timber when an argument began. One of the loggers threatened to shoot his supervisor, 52-year-old Charles Cheek, of McQueen Road, Shannon, Branch said.

The man got a shotgun and began firing at Cheek’s feet, Branch said, before the other loggers were able to wrestle the weapon away from him. Cheek and two employees, Don Locklear, of Ira Road, Red Springs, and Ron Blackburn, of Haisley Road, Fairmont, tried to flee in Cheek’s 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, but the man got into another truck and used it to ram the Silverado, according to Branch.

A chase then followed and the Silverado was struck again, causing it to roll several times before it came to rest on its roof.

The assailant then got out of his truck, grabbed a sledge hammer and began smashing the windshield of the Silverado while Cheek, Locklear and Blackburn were trapped inside, according to Branch. After shattering the windshield, the assailant fled.

Cheek, Locklear were treated at Southeastern Regional Medical Center and transferred to another hospital, according to Amanda Crabtree, a spokesperson for SRMC, and Blackburn was treated and released from SRMC.

My friend is one of the injured loggers. To everyone out there, this guy needs to be brought to justice. My pal is listed in stable condition. If anyone can help, please call the RCSD. Our prayers are with his family and The Cheek's family.
