FAIRMONT — Kwinton Hinson poured in a game-high 27 points, leading the Fairmont boys basketball team to a 77-62 non-conference win over West Bladen on Tuesday at Fairmont High.

Hinson, who leads the county in scoring at 23.4 points per game, helped the Golden Tornadoes (3-2) build a 45-38 halftime-lead before outscoring the Knights 19-9 in a decisive third quarter. Fairmont’s Jarrod Neal and Shemar Barfield added 10 points apiece.

After sitting out the first four games with a sprained knee, senior guard Jackie Oxendine made his season-debut, chipping in eight points.

In girls action, Fairmont fell short to West Bladen, 49-43. Na’Jewel Ingram scored a game-high 19 points while Anasia Evans added 16 for the Lady Golden Tornadoes (3-3). Courtney Thompson led West Bladen (3-0) with 16.

Gray’s Creek sweeps Red Springs

RED SPRINGS — Quinn Lowery’s 20 points wasn’t enough in the Red Springs boys basketball team’s 74-56 home loss to Gray’s Creek.

Red Springs (1-3), which suffered a 39-point loss to Gray’s Creek a week ago, kept the deficit at single digits throughout the first half. The Bears (3-1), however, outscored the Red Devils 25-12 in the third and kept the pace. Jeff Gibson led Gray’s Creek with a game-high 23 points. Corey Okonkwo added 13 for Red Springs. On the girls side, Gray’s Creek avenged last week’s season-opening loss to Red Springs with a 53-40 home win Tuesday.

The Lady Red Devils struggled to a 13-point first half before Robyn McPhaul shouldered the offense in the second half on her way to a team-high 18 points. But it was too little, too late. Gray’s Creek's Jalyn Taylor netted a game-high 21.
