We must speak up against destruction of young minds

To the Editor,

On Friday, we experienced another terrible school shooting by a young man in his early 20s. This letter is not about gun control or freedom of speech rights, this letter is about the majority of American people — people who believe in God, discipline, training our children to respect others, kindness and love.

We have been silent too long and have allowed the few to take prayer and discipline out of our schools, to not allow any mention of God or even the singing of Christmas carols. We have allowed Hollywood, video-game makers and so-called singers to fill our homes, our cars and our children’s ear-phones with hate and violence as never before in history. Without fail, we find out after one of these shootings by a young man, that he is a devoted fan of violent video games.

How can we expect kindness and love from a young developing mind that has been filled with violent garbage? Garbage in … garbage out. A recent study by a university found that after three days of playing violent video games that behavior changed; this did not happen with non-violent games.

It is time for the vast majority of Americans to stand up against this type of entertainment, to say no to the one person that claims to be offended by the mention of God and prayer. How have we come to the point where one person or small group can tell the majority what they can and cannot do? Where have we lost the practice of the beliefs and training that made this country great?

We can no longer remain silent when it comes to the destruction of our young.

Evelyn Smith

"How have we come to the point where one person or small group can tell the majority what they can and cannot do?" ~Ms. E. Smith

The United States is a Republic, not a Democracy. You might want to read up on it.

"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be." ~Thomas Jefferson

It's funny how the letter to the editor mentioned several things, but rap was the only thing pulled from it to comment on. Now, while I agree that rap music (gangsta) is not good for any ears, violent video games have proven to be equally dangerous (Columbine,Conn.). I heard one say that gun violence will not become an issue to some until it touches a particular back door. Well maybe this kid wasn't a thug, maybe he was from the right side of the track, maybe he did have a mental problem (which is not a defense for some killers, but seems to be the answer for others), but at the end of the day he was a killer. He took innocent babies and hard working teachers lives. So, the issue at hand is will we NOW finally do something to STOP THE VIOLENCE (a rap song that was made in the 80's to prevent (draw attention to) black on black murder or will we continue to watch our young children cut down in streets, schools, churches, etc. A child whether black, white, or blue is still a child. Each life is equally important.

It was the devil, thats the problem, God has been pushed to the side by some people and trying to take it away from those of us that believe in him, but it wont happen, no one can take JESUS out of my heart, not even with a gun

God is not part of the equation. It is possible to be a good person even without god in your life. I do it everyday. Don't blame the lack of religion in schools for the problem. The real problem is the lack of good parenting.

God is part of the equation. If God was in the

home there would be good parenting

Rap music has destroyed millions of young minds, and not much mention of it. Rap music glammorizes killing and a criminal thugory lifestyle. Something must be done about rap music and the so called artists who spew this garbage.

Leave it up to RossisanIdiot!!!! What did rap music have to do with Newtown? Maybe it was the welfare he was on; my bad he lived in a 3,100 sq ft home. It was the terrible parents!!! His mom was a loving lady; a giver of both time and money!!! Maybe he didn't wanna go to store with his EBT card; they had plenty of money!!!! Ross, the POOR did not do this, and I doubt he was listening to NWA, Public Enemy, or any other rap group for that matter. I hate to say this Ross, but you really do come off as being a RACIST!!!!!

I have to agree with Ross on this point.

Rap is destroying many young minds because it teaches them that you can take what you want and can go about life the easy way out.

It does not teach the youth that hard work and seizing each opportunity will lead to a successful lifestyle throughout the duration of your life. Therefore music does not kill. A gun has the potential to kill if a finger is on the trigger.

Sportsjunkie, of course I am aware your comment was directed toward Rossisright. However, this in an open forum. Sorry my comment rustled your jimmies.

Yes, there are many kinds of degenerative music, but Ross brought up rap, so that's what my comment was about. To suggest music and guns are one in the same is absurd. To suggest any kind of music should be outlawed, even jokingly, is ludicrous.

You showed yourself by going straight to rap music. I clearly stated that guns nor music kill people. PEOPLE DO!!! Furthermore Ross, where is your normally harsh, racially inflammatory comments about this nice KILLER? Who is really exposing truths about themselves?

Sports: Hey, I want you to tell us why you don't think this man listened to rap music... Tell us why. C'mon, surly you must have a preconcieved reason why you think he would never listen to "that kind" of music.... right?.....

You also think Herman Cain would never listen to country music, don't you..... Be careful, you are exposing your true beliefs.....

BBBD, my statement was directed toward Ross, but music and guns are one in the same. It was stated earlier that guns don't kill people, people kill people! Music doesn't kill people either!!! Outlaw heavy metal, country and western, hard rock, and the blues. The all have had as equally a negative impact as rap!!

She mention music, but I see you chose rap over heavy metal and all the heroine addicts and cocaine junkies, hmmm!!!! I've seen people listen to Country/Western music get drunk and trash a bar. I see you overlooked the rest of the post! Ross, any of us could be subjected to randoms acts of violence. I can assure you that I don't have blinders on. You seem to always have a super-stupid post when a certain stereotype is in our paper committing a crime, but I see you chose not to post the typical Ross like remark on any of the articles about Newton. You don't have to say why!!!!! One of your previous post stated, "that if there were no poor people there wouldn't be any problems." Wrong again Ross. I know my opinion doesn't matter, but you are what you are!!

Why is it inconceivable that he listened to rap?

Whether he listened to it or not, the lifestyle glorified by most rap/hip-hop music has a degenerative affect on our culture.

Sportsteacher: You and your opinion mean absolutely nothing to me. The lady who sent the letter mentioned "music"... So I elborated on it a bit. You and people like you are the very reason crime and stupidity are escalating daily.

You keep denying it, sooner or later it(crime) is gonna sneak up and bite you in the rear. You just keep your eyes closed and your fingers in your ears and maybe, just maybe it'll go away.......

Davidlocklear77 you can blame music for corrupting minds. I said that rap music is no more damaging than any other! I don't blame country music(Solo Cup) for glamorizing drinking!! I have listened to gangsta rap, and not once did it make me wanna go take something that belongs to someone else! I've played violent video games, it didn't make me wanna go out and shoot anyone! It's always this blame factor for societies shortcomings! People will make decisions, and there will be consequences. We need to make the consequences more harsh!!!

Well said, Evelyn. It has become a cultural problem. Liberals in our society have practically stigmatized those who have faith and religion in their lives. It is this which is causing the decline in our civilization.

DaveD you're wrong. Religion will not save a declining society. Look at the Romans and the Byzantines, both fell even though they were devoutly christian at the time. It is flexibility that keep societies strong.
