RALEIGH — A 63-year-old Lumberton farmer pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to fraudulently collecting more than $1 million in crop insurance, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Thomas G. Walker.

Harry Dean Canady pleaded guilty to conspiracy to make false statements, making material false statements, committing mail and wire fraud, making false statements to the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation, aiding and abetting false statements to the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation, aggravated identity theft, money laundering and aiding and abetting money laundering.

The statement said that Canady fraudulently collected $1,036,516 of federal crop insurance. No sentencing date was announced in the statement.

According to Walker, Canady owned and rented farmland throughout Robeson County and grew tobacco, corn, wheat, soybeans and other crops. The statement said that from August 2006 through December 2009 Canady and others conspired to commit fraud by filing false insurance claims reporting losses, not reporting sales of tobacco and other grains, and hiding illegal profits in other people’s names.

The statement said that Canady was being paid twice for each pound or bushel of his crop through the false insurance claims and through the sale of “hidden” tobacco or grain.

Canady used the names of his grandchildren and fictitious names to hide some of his crop production and sales, according to the statement. He also worked with co-conspirators to sell crops “under the table,” hiding the sales from authorities.

Canady also pleaded guilty to retaliation against a federal official, the statement said. Canady became aware he was under investigation in 2008 and made threats against investigators. According to the statement, on Jan. 23 of this year, Canady threatened to kill a special agent of the United States Department of Agriculture.

Canady also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon. During a 2010 search of Canady’s property, lawmen found six firearms and more than 180 rounds of ammunition.

In 1998, Canady pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of his brother, who he ran over with a pickup truck after the two got into a fight. That sentence was suspended.

BBBD is correct. I had to register just to respond to your comment. YOUR uncle did kill and steal. You and people like you with your attitude are one of the biggest problems in this county. You will defend family tooth and nail even when they are wrong.

Fraudulently collecting $1,036,516 of federal crop insurance is by no means" trying to survive". It is blatant theft, no more no less.

I lurked here for years without commenting but your lack of logic just inspired me to comment.

By the way I really don't like Grammar Nazi's as I make grammatical mistakes as well but an ellipsis is used to replace words that end a quoted sentence, then it is usual to use 4 dots: three for the ellipsis and one (a full stop or period ) to end the quotation.

Oh no we can't talk about our own can we Mr. Ross? White collar crime must be something you are ok with. Stealing the taxpayers money is more noble and different than receiving it I guess. Showing our true colors now aren't we my dear. No pun intended.

Why did the Robesonian have to bring up the situation with his brother in 1998? You could have said that he had a felony from a past conviction. Its the holidays so when Thomas' children read this article so many feelings are going to be brought back just so you could make you newspaper article more controversial. The man did what he did and this situation had nothing to do with what happen then. The Robesonian has never been sensitive to that situation as I am remembering from years ago. Sometimes when you publish news you have to think of the victims also.

But to you Donnie DOUGLAS:

I have been reading comments and YOUR post on facebook. It almost makes me sick how YOU always want to play the poor victim when he brings iT on himself. If you don't post this I just want you to know that you a very insensitive man. My personal dealingS with you and your paper have never been positive anyway. All the basic misprints and the limited space you give to GOOD POSITIVE news. Its okay though, let you negative news fill up your newspaper. Make old wounds fresh again so that you can sale your newspaper.

@jkl2012: Are you serious? The Robesonian pulls the history up on every criminal (w/ a history) and prints it. No matter the charge. There should be no exception in this matter. Fact of the matter, had he not committed the fraud he wouldn't be in the paper at all. So, who's to blame The Robesonian or Mr. Canady?

jkl2012, I won't speak for Mr. Douglas but the reporting of accurate information should never be frowned upon in a free society and must remain welcomed to help insure that freedom. As a Robesonian, it's my RIGHT TO KNOW EVERYTHING IN TH PUBLIC DOMAIN about the people around me.

Your suggestion that were it not for this article, the slain man's children would not be reminded of his death during the holidays is one of the most ridiculous things I've read here.

What you should be in an uproar about is why just a few years after murdering his own blood was this man on our streets again to further his criminal activities involving his own grandchildren no less!

It must just be that I don't know him, right? He really is a good ole boy, right? I'm sure that's it.

Maybe the courts will again spank his hand and get him back to his life quickly, maybe even in time for him not to miss any important church or civic meetings cause I'm sure tons of people will miss the counsel of such a stalwart individual.

He should run for Congress or the Robeson County Board of Commissioners (COCKROACHS). He sure sounds highly qualified for either.

No No No Percy. He got caught so it's clear he doesn't have have the same aptitude as those you mentioned. It would be like a HS player trying out for the NFL where the real professionals ply their trade.
