Getting real with gun control

The usual gun extremists largely went into hiding immediately after the obscenity in Connecticut. The National Rifle Association offered only a flowery expression of sympathy for the victims. Real brave, aren’t they?

One foe of gun control who did speak out was Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican. He said the “more realistic discussion” is “how do we target people with mental illness who use firearms?”

Actually, not realistic at all. It’s easy to identify a mentally ill person with access to firearms once he’s massacred a kindergarten class in about 15 seconds. We also learned of warning signs after James Holmes shot up a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., and Seung-Hui Cho did his deadly rampage at Virginia Tech. All had been good students, by the way.

Banning weapons of war would be a lot easier and less intrusive than psychoanalyzing anyone who wants to buy a gun. But as the shock of Newtown, Conn., mellows, the new theme of gun-rights absolutists is coming together: The problem is not widely sold assault weapons with magazines capable of carrying 30 rounds. It’s crazy people who get their hands on them.

As it happened, an insane Adam Lanza was able to kill his mother and rapidly mow down 27 innocents at Sandy Hook Elementary School because his allegedly not-disturbed mom kept a Bushmaster .223 caliber rifle — among other mass-killing machines — in their tidy home. Reports portray Nancy Lanza as a “high-strung” divorced mother trying to deal with an antisocial adolescent. That is hardly a unique set of circumstances. Who would have taken her guns away?

My in-laws, originally farm people from Indiana, owned a spread in New Milford, Conn., a town about 16 miles from Newtown and with similar demographics. Over the years, cul-de-sacs for people from New York and its inner suburbs rose around us. The newcomers saw the pastoral setting as a wholesome place to raise families. Most of them were fine neighbors, but some imagined that gun arsenals would make them into the country people they clearly were not.

We had some ancient rifles that we used for target practice on one of the fields. But on many afternoons, the entire valley’s peace was jarred by the rapid firing of exurbanites playing warrior. Similar complaints had been aired in Newtown.

About troubled young people: One day we discovered that the well-house had been destroyed. After rebuilding it at some cost, we caught two boys tearing the new structure apart. My husband grabbed the ringleader by the collar and yelled at him.

That evening, the father — with ringleader in tow — visited the farmhouse to ask my husband whether he had roughed up his boy (no doubt the boy’s story). My husband got annoyed and said, “You’re not hearing me.” The father then conceded that his son was upset after “the divorce.” As Dad turned his back, the juvenile gave my husband the finger.

A messed up kid, we agree, but also a father loath to see his child as seriously troubled. Nancy Lanza had a real tough case in Adam, but was in such deep denial that she even took him out for shooting practice.

Given the realities, a background check of a gun buyer’s mental condition would logically include relatives and friends. Who wouldn’t have given Nancy Lanza alone a clean bill of mental health?

Our neighborhoods are full of loners and moody adolescents who dress in black. The vast majority are harmless. Short of arming grade-school librarians, the only sane way to curb the mass killings would be to cut off the flow of mass-killing machines. That’s being “realistic.”

Dear report

Your remarks are nonsequiter. I made the point that our Bill of Rights should not be diminished because of the morons in authority who fail to keep mentally ill people where they can't harm themselves or others, If this man had been where he belonged (a mental hospital) we wouldn't be having this discussion. And even if he didnt have access to a gun, he would have found some other way to commit the murders. That's how Satan works my friend. And this is what is called reasoning....get some.

Ps... Sorry for the typos. iPads aren't made for typing!

Ranger, did you just say there is no difference in a crowded room of a killer has a assault weapon with 30 rounds per clip vs a single round weapon or knife? You ever heard thE expression, don't bring a knife to a gun fight?

Percy, how is it that you turn every topic into same sex marriage? You must be mad over a sibling or relative for getting married within the same sex. I do not believe in same sex marriages but I surely do not care if they are allowed to marry. How does it affect me? Gays will be together regardless of the title of marriage. God will be the judge, so why should you waste your time.

Because we love our country and the institution of marriage.... We must draw a line to the stupid stuff democrats try everyday in this country, if we don't, someone will want to marry their dog or horse... Don't believe it, ask someone from a century ago would they ever think a man would want to marry another man... That's why it wasn't put in the constitution, heck the founders thought common sense and fear of God would prevail for eternity.... Oh well..

Fact:: There are only two animals on the face of the earth that will "have at it" with the same sex.... That's a DOG and a HUMAN.... Think, have you ever seen two male fish? 2 female birds? 2 male horses?... Heck even tree's know which one's to germinate with...... Again, dogs and humans.. must have a little something in common. Go ahead ask me somethin... I know some stuff.

ps. Sorry Mr. Percy for jumpin the gun, it slipped. But I know we think the same....

Mr. Douglas

You run a good paper, so I am really surprised that you allowed these many column inches to become birdcage liner. That's all this section is good for.

Our Bill of Rights allows us to keep and bear arms, period. Al of this tripe about so called assault weapons is just a load of horse manure. Semi auto versus single shot, fire arms are deadly and can kill as many as an auto. But, so can a knife for that matter, wielded in the right hand.

What is needed in this country is to stop the influence of the moronic lobs like the one who wrote this article, who have been behind the liberal parole and prison sentences that allow small amounts of bail, or the possibility of parole after you serve 1/4 th of your sentence. Or if that makes you mad, what about the emptying of the mental health hospitals, so that "the mentally ill can blend back into society." Betcha really like that one, don't you? Just think, because of people like the writer of this article, you could have your own encounter with your own version of Lanza, and thanks to efforts to disarm everyone, you won't have the wherewithal to fight back.

And finally don't forget that this same government t was responsible for Fast and Furious. Does a sane person really put it beyond possibility that this same government might adopt Taliban tactics and take a mentally retarded prison and use him for their ends? That's what fast and furious was designed to do, but failed because they got caught due to some whistle blowers.

Folks, the evil of this government is not to be downplayed. T them, the ends justify the means. They want a disarmed populace, a weak bunch of sheep. So, Mr. Douglas, I would kindly ask you to refrain from printing such garbage in the future. We may not be able to keep the criminals in jail here, thanks to the sorry judges we have elected, nor can we keep the mentally ill in the institutions, so we will be keeping our guns, thank you very much. As charleston Heston said, "from. My cold dead hands."

I'm gonna go out and practice gun control. Shootin up my raindeer dislplay led by Rudolph. Gun control, I'll control my aim for his nose.

Hey democrats, you know what stops a criminal with a gun?..... A law abiding citizen with a gun....... Ain't dat somethin. Life is pretty simple when one applies a bit of common sense.

Happy New Year good people!

Ps. Lets make the white house a "gun free zone"...

Gun control isn't the total answer however I

beleive there ought to be some control of war type

weapons. But the whole key is God and education

Froma, take your own advice about "getting real." Your foolish belief that prohibition can work or will solve anything is barely worth comment. You are a disgrace to anyone with Hoosier heritage. Until the day you post signs declaring your home a gun-free zone and demand disarming the government as well as private citizens, keep your thoughts on gun control to yourself.

Was your "husband" a woman? Sure sounds like it. Probably named "Alice". You must be one of those same-sex marriage democrats.

The vast majority of drivers are sober, but more people are killed by drunk drivers than by gun carrying crazies. Do we cut off the flow of mass killing machines (autos)? The gun nor the cars kill, the irresponsible people who chose to use them are the only ones to blame. Unfortunately, outlawing either of them will make it stop.

Ban fingers. A gun can't fire without a set of those........

Guns don't kill, people kill! Simple.

Message to all you whimpy democrats, who call the cops while their kid is being raped, YOU CAN TAKE MY GUNS WHEN YOU PRY EM FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS...............

Merry Christmas! What a beautiful time of year.

From an extremely pro-gun, pro 2nd Amendment loving Democrat, please don't frame this in the context of the parties. I often disagree with your published views but on some things we share some commonalities. Calling this a Dem vs Rep argument is going to play into the hands of those on both sides who for their own reasons (which I support them having the right to have)for not enjoying firearms as you and I do. I like your suggestion to the avid anti-gunners to post signs on their property proclaiming their distaste with the private ownership of firearms and I in turn will keep my "Nothing found here is worth your life" sign as my message to thieves and intruders.

Right again, Ross!!! Except for one thing: when those same-sex marriage democrats try to take MY guns, they'll have "cold dead hands" before I will.
