LUMBERTON — A 25-year-old Fairmont woman was killed 33 minutes into the new year when the all-terrain vehicle she was on was struck by a car about two miles southwest of Lumberton, according to the state Highway Patrol.

The drivers of both vehicles have been charged with driving while impaired.

Casie Blue, of 6546 N.C. 130 East, was a passenger on the ATV being driven north on Pleasant Hope Road by 39-year-old Guster Sylvester Scott, of 97 Smokey Road in Fairmont, according to a report by Trooper J.A. Jones. The ATV was traveling about 35 mph in the 55-mph zone when it was struck by a 1986 Ford, which was traveling an estimated 60 mph. Blue and Scott were both thrown from the ATV, and both vehicles exited the road to the left and ended up in a ditch.

The report said the ATV did not have any rear lights.

Blue died at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. The report did not list any injuries to Scott, but he was also taken to SRMC.

The driver of the Ford car, Melvin Eddy Oxendine, 52, of 1862 Crawford Road, Lumberton, had a blood-alcohol level of .07, according to the report. The report did not list Scott’s blood-alcohol level.

Damage to the ATV was estimated at $3,000 and damage to the car was estimated at $1,000.
