LUMBERTON — A former standout athlete at Fairmont High School has been charged with a felony in an accident that killed two ex-teammates, according to a statement by Erich Hackney, an investigator with the Robeson County District Attorney’s Office.

Dymaggio Alexander Gilchrist, 18, of 301 Gilchrist Road in Marietta, is charged with two counts of felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and reckless driving in the July 2012 accident that killed Nokolma Dakota Hunt, 18, of 1716 N.C. 904, Fairmont, and Tyreke Dashon Addison, 18, of 1102 E. 8th St., Lumberton. Gilchrist, who just finished his freshman year playing football for a university in Ohio, was arrested on Monday and bond was set at $30,000.

Gilchrist and two other passengers in the vehicle, Devont’e Shaquan Govan, 17, of 142 Leroy Road, Marietta, and Darius Justin McCallum, 18, of 6175 Wiregrass Road, Orrum, were also injured in the accident, but have recovered.

According to an initial investigation by Trooper David Raynor of the state Highway Patrol, Gilchrist was driving a 1994 Ford on N.C. 41 just south of Fairmont at 7:32 p.m. on July 9 when it left left the roadway to the right and traveled 109 feet before striking a tree.

According to Hackney, his investigation showed that Gilchrist was “play acting” while driving down the highway just before the accident, dropping his head and closing his eyes several times while the car was traveling at approximately 55 mph. In addition, a video that was made 90 minutes before the deadly accident by one of the occupants was recovered by the District Attorney’s Office and depicts those involved, including Gilchrist, smoking marijuana. Hackney said a blood test confirmed that Gilchrist had marijuana in his system.

Gilchrist saw limited action as an outside linebacker for Malone University in Canton, Ohio, during the recently completed football season. As a senior at Fairmont High in 2011, Gilchrist was named the county’s Player of the Year after compiling 28 touchdowns and rushing for 1,228 yards. He also started at free safety and led the team in interceptions.

Addison,a wide receiver and running back, was a two-time all-county selection by The Robesonian and paired with Hunt, a tailback, led the Golden Tornadoes to conference championships in 2010 and 2011. Addison also played on the varsity basketball team and was the starting center fielder on the baseball team. Hunt was a utility player on Fairmont’s baseball team.

This is just so sad for all parties involved...its sad for the families, friends, and communities that knew and loved them all...but as painful as it is to realize, one persons actions caused the deaths of two loved young men...and yes the families now want justice, but even if it was up to them, there is nothing they can do, it is in the hands of the authorities...it hurts me to see such harsh, nasty thoughts come from some people, not on here (yet), but on other media sites, its just terrible...the two young men are gone, and yes it is sad...its sad that the accused will now have to deal with the actions he displayed on that day...but they were his actions, he did it, and this is the end results...i pray for his very peace of mind, because if he is reading some of the comments that ive read on the other sites, he will need to have the backbone to endure the comments, and accept what has and will be said...or he will just crumble...i pray that doesnt happen...and i pray for healing on the community and families, this is like living that moment all over again...this is just my opinion, dont want to seem like im preaching, but i just cant get over how heartbreaking it was to see those two young men being laid to rest...i knew Tyreke personally, and to not see that beautiful smile anymore is devastating...may we all learn that our ACTIONS, always, always will have an AFFECT on someone!!! ALWAYS!!!

@ tellit, so maybe I misunderstood your statement when you said it should all be over. I interpreted that to mean you felt he should not be held responsible for the choice he made. The one " left to answer for it" is the one who SHOULD answer for it because whether you want to face the the fact or not, his immature and wreck less behavior caused the deaths of two young men. What you fail to realize is that when you are the driver, you are responsible for the occupants in your vehicle. If he wanted to engage insmoking, he should have waited until the car was parked. Also, he was playing behind the wheel ( I think you forget about that part). Regarding God's will~ let me explain it to you like this: God blesses us with life ok. If I make the bad decision to go stand in the middle of the street while cars are moving,( knowing I know better which makes it wreck less behavior) chances are I will be cutting my life short as ppl typically die from being hit by a car. Call it a glitch in the matrix if you will....

@carolinagirl~ I would say 1st because everything in Rob. Co is slow. (j/k). But seriously, maybe they were just conducting a "thorough" investigation. I really don't get it, b/c these details came to light a loooong time ago....

@ tellit, are you kidding me? Have you never heard of being responsible for yor actions? And that when you make a choice, you must also deal with the consequences of said choice? Two kids lost their lives! There is no coming back from that, there are no " do overs". That being said, I do feel sorry for the young man driving also because I know he never meant for this to happen. But it did, and he, being the driver, he has to be held liable as he was responsible for the others in his car. Playing behind the wheel and being under the influence of drugs while operating a vehicle is a crime. If those that died were related to you, would you be ok with " it just being over"? This has nothing to do with God and his will. You loose the hedges of God's protection when you go against him. If they had All made the choice to not engage in wreckless behavior, then, this would not have happened.

@lolo413. Well put and thorough. What you write was the truth and the political correct way to say it. Nothing else needs to be said

@lolo413. That was my point exactly. They all took part in reckless behavior. You talking about not God's will. Everyone has an appointed time and reckless behavior does not change that. Cut it any way you want to but the truth is they were all a party to what took place with one left to answer for it. I am not saying he does not deserve punishment for his actions.

tellit: We can guess why you have a biased opinion.... Must we feel this way?.....

Try not looking at the pictures and names before you form your opinion. Distortion...

They were all involved in this together. they had been out together and were all doing the same things. It is so unfortunate for something like this ti happen. But it was simply their time to go and when it is your time you going. Not trying to sound harse just telling truth. i miss dem boys too but it should all be over this aint chaging nothing.

All of them made a choice that night. All choices have consequences. Two died. And one will face murder charges. If it was "their time to go" as you so eloquently stated, then, it's his time to go to prison..... "for them going" not trying to sound harsh either....

Won't bring them back but was the right decision. Don't get me wrong I don't wish bad on anyone for this, but this tragedy hurt a lot if people. So if there was "play acting" Involved then I think those deserving punishment should get it. With a fair trial and jury like everyone else of course.

I agree, it will not bring them back but these young men have a future, and if play acting was going on than he deserve to be punish.I think he will get a fair trail he should know that when you get in a driver seat you are responeable for the people in your car. These young men parent love their kids just like everyone else and I know they want justice. I think that young people need to be 21 before they get behind a wheel of a car. Just because 16-19 years old some of them is not responseable to drive. They need to know you can not play with a car and closing your eyes while driving you asking for trouble. That why so many young people die because stupid thing like this. So do he deserve punishment, I will say yes, he should know better.
