LUMBERTON — The North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded a $3 million contract to Barnhill Contracting Co. of Tarboro to resurface more than 27 miles of roads in Robeson County.

Work will begin as soon as Jan. 28 on U.S. 501 and N.C. 130 East, each near Rowland, and on N.C. 710 between Pembroke and Red Springs. Several secondary roads in Robeson County also will be resurfaced.

A completion date has been set for Oct. 31.

It was one of 23 contracts totaling about $145 million awarded by the department in December for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. Contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 9.8 percent, or $15.8 million, below the department’s estimates.
