Several events set to mark King holiday

LUMBERTON — Several events to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is on Monday, will be held in Robeson County during the next few days.

They are:

— The Golden Leaf Masonic Lodge 124 will hold a celebration on Saturday at 2 p.m. at McCormick Chapel AME Church at 215 Main St.

The event, which will be hosted by Rev. Dr. Judy V. Johnson, pastor of the church, will feature guest speaker, Rep. Milton F. Fitch Jr. The service will honor slain Lumberton police Officer Jeremiah Goodson, and others.

— The town of Red Springs will hold a celebration on Sunday at 6 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church at 300 Daniel McLeod Road.

The keynote speaker will be Judge Judith Milsap-Daniels, a native of Robeson County who has served as a District Court judge since 2008. For information, call 910-843-5177.

— A candlelight service will be held at St. Pauls on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at 2917 Great Marsh Church.

The Rev. Phillip Marks, pastor of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, will speak at the event, which is open to the public. For information, call 910-865-4030.
— Dothan Presbyterian Church at 501 E. Martin Luther King Drive will hold a black history program on Sunday at 3 p.m. featuring guest speakers Elouise Jackson, Gwen Rainer,Lille McKoy and Willie Mitchell.
— A celebration will be held in Fairmont on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Fairmont Heritage Center at 207 South Main St.
— The Robeson County chapter of the Black Caucus will hold its annual celebration in Lumberton on Monday at noon at the Bethany Presbyterian Church on Elizabethtown Road.

Robeson County District Court Judge Judith Milsap Daniels will be the keynote speaker, and will be honored following the celebration with an appreciation dinner. The dinner is free and open to the public.
