January employees
LUMBERTON — Gwen Daniels, Darlene Hammonds and Lakeshia Revels were named employees of the month for January for the Public Schools of Robeson County.
Daniels, a bus driver at Long Branch Elemen-tary School, is the Bus Driver of the Month. Hamm-onds, a pre-kindergarten teacher assistant at Deep Branch Elemen-tary School, is the Classified Employee of the Month, and Revels, a science teacher at the same school, is the Certified Employee of the Month.
Fairmont teacher,
students win contest
RALEIGH — Ashely Berdeau, an advanced art teacher at Fairmont High School, and students Aaron Epps, Pasinee Choommai and Celeste Hunt are statewide winners of the North Carolina Association of Educators’ Multicultural Arts Contest.
Berdeau received first place for her teaching unit “Multicultural Art Unit;” Epps, an 11th-grade student, received first place for his poem “Will You Still Love Me?”; Choommai, an 11th-grader, received first place for her essay “Multiculturalism;” and Celeste Hunt, a senior, received first place for her artwork “Share the Love.”
Each of the winners was presented with a plaque by NCAE President Rodney Ellis. Their work will be on display through February at the NCAE Center at 700 S. Salisbury St.
Patel makes Chowan
president’s list
LUMBERTON — Shivani Patel of Lumberton made the the president’s list for fall 2012 at Chowan University in Murfreesboro.
To be included on the President’s List, full-time students must make a grade-point average of 3.8 or better for the semester.
UNCP schedules
‘first lectures’ series
PEMBROKE — The University of North Carolina at Pembroke will hold “first lectures,” a series about teachers and leaders who inspired the meaning of service, at Moore Hall Auditorium on Wednesday from 3 to 4 p.m. A reception will be held at 2:30 p.m.
Guest panelists include Betty Oxendine Mangum, daughter of the late Professor Clifton Oxendine, History Department; Ron Sutton, son of the late Virgie Sutton, assistant manager of the university cafeteria; Linda Oxendine, daughter of the late Dr. Herbert G. Oxendine, academic dean; and Douglas Hunt, retired math teacher and former student of the late Professor James Arnold Jacobs, Mathematics Department.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
Hunger Summit
is Jan. 26 at UNCP
PEMBROKE — The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s Hunger Council will host a Robeson County Hunger Summit on Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Regional Center at COMtech.
The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Ray Buchanan, a Vietnam veteran and co-founder of Stop Hunger Now, which delivers rapid responses to hunger and food insecurity across the globe.
