RED SPRINGS — Shemar Barfield poured in 18 points and Kwinton Hinson added 15, leading the Fairmont boys basketball team to a 78-41 rout of Red Springs in Three Rivers Conference action Friday at Red Springs High.

The Golden Tornadoes jumped out to a 17-6 first-quarter lead before swelling its command over the host Red Devils to 37-14 at halftime.

Minutes into the second half, Red Springs coach Glenn Patterson pulled his first string and sat them on the bench — where they stayed planted the rest of the game.

“Our first group just didn’t go out and play with energy, so I had to bench them,” he said. “Any time you have to rely on your second group to go in and win a ball game for you, that’s the result you’re going to get.

“You know the saying, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it? Well, it’s broke.’”

Markeiss Blue had a team-high seven points off the bench for Red Springs (3-11, 0-2). Luke Hunt and Jackie Oxendine added 13 and 11, respectively, for Fairmont (12-3, 2-0).

Fairmont girls edge Devils

Anasia Evans’ 24 points led the Fairmont girls to a 45-43 road win over Red Springs on Friday night.

Leading 40-31 after three quarters, Fairmont fought off a late Red Springs rally to hold on for the Three Rivers victory.

Na’Jewel Ingram chipped in 14 points for the Lady Golden Tornadoes (8-7, 1-1).

Jasmine Murchison led the Lady Red Devils with 13.

Banner, Bulldogs top Gators

LAKE WACCAMAW — Kane Banner pumped in 18 points, leading the St. Pauls boys basketball team to a 81-74 road win over East Columbus on Friday.

The Bulldogs (9-5, 2-0), who have won four straight, held a 39-17 command at halftime and never looked back.

Following Banner’s lead, St. Pauls’ Deion Gilchrist and Malik Livingston added 16 and 15 points, respectively.

In girls action, St. Pauls was outdone by East Columbus, 53-39.

Alexis Roberson scored a game-high 22 points for the Lady Bulldogs (6-8, 1-1).

Swett swept by Pinecrest

PEMBROKE — The Purnell Swett boys basketball team couldn’t keep up with Pinecrest in a 74-59 home loss on Friday.

The Rams (3-11, 1-2) were on the Patriots heels after the first quarter, 14-11, before getting outscored 25-12 in the second quarter.

Mitchell Hill had a team-high 17 points for Swett, followed by Tyler Maynor with 13 and James Chavis with 10.

Trevion Wooten led Pinecrest (11-3, 2-0) with 18.

The Swett girls were throttled by Pinecrest, 42-9.

Felecia Painter poured in a game-high 21 for the Lady Patriots.
