LUMBERTON — A new school exhibit, The Learning Zone, was unveiled at the Exploration Station in Lumberton on Monday. The zone, which is located at 104 Chestnut St., has four main areas so that kids can explore and broaden their horizons.
The first area is a reading loft with books and cozy seating areas for students to read. Underneath the reading loft is the “Around the World” Center, which has multi-colored cultural books, puzzles and musical instruments. The third area is the math center with a magnetic board and magnetic numbers for a variety of math activities, including flashcards and games. The fourth area is the art center, which holds a variety of materials, basic art concept posters and activities to re-enforce art.
“Part of our mission statement is building a foundation for lifelong learning,” schools Superintendent Johnny Hunt said. “However, we can help and partner together, we are willing to do that and it shows that learning can be fun,”
The Public Schools of Robeson County sponsored and built the exhibit. The Learning Zone opened up for students to start exploring on Tuesday.
“We would not be able to remain the place we are without the help from our community,” said Brooke Hardee, the director of the Exploration Station .
The zone has a traditional blackboard. The gugs in the area also emphasize numbers, Spanish words, colors and the individual states.
The Exploration Station is open Tuesdays through Saturdays. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, it is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Thursday, it is open from 10 a.m. to 8 pm., and on Saturdays, it is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
