Election might be time to address pay and benefits

To the Editor,

With all due respect to the county commissioners, the public is very concerned about spending, from the federal level to the county level. Spending is out of control and this country is broke.

Why do the Robeson County commissioners have higher pay and benefits than most, if not all, of the other counties in the state? We are the poorest county in North Carolina and have some of the highest taxes.

It is obscene to hand out $320,000 a year of hard-earned tax dollars to be spent as individual commissioners see fit, without a vote or discussion with the other commissioners. If there is a legitimate need for tax dollars, then there is a legitimate need for the commissioners to discuss and vote on funding this need.

I personally do not trust any politician to hand out tax dollars without oversight; it is to easy to give to the person or organization that will back you in an election, rather than seriously consider the need. Having been done this way in the past is not a reason to continue the practice.

The needs in this community are great: Our schools are suffering from lack of funding; teachers are paying for supplies; mobile units need replacing, security should be updated etc., etc.

Since the commissioners refuse to address discretionary funds, salary and benefits, this problem needs to be on the ballot the next election and let weary taxpayers speak.

Dont yall get it yet? The majority of us are too stupid to not vote the same way for the same idiots who got us in this mess. We're just too durn stupid!

With these so-called leaders one thing comes out their mouth, but their actions are totally different. We need some women to start running for commissioner spots. They got more sense any day than a conniving, double- talking excuse for a boy.

Watch what they do, not what they say! When some of these folk have to spend some jailtime for stealing citizens money through lack of transparency, some respect will come back to the office of commissioner. It;s like my momma tol me,it'll all come out in the wash!

$50 million in cash reserves? Is that enough for this large county? The way government spends? One problem and a big one I might add is that we have leaders in this county who have allowed themselves to develop an aura of entitlement...some who are now not in those positions and (adept obervers can readily call their names)have high-rolled on the people for a long time. They are used to it and they have gotten away with it...some more than others. Let's find some qualified, caring, community-minded, ethical, nepotism-repelling, progressive-thinking leaders and get them elected. Then let's continue to hold them all accountable, pray for them and support them. The first step in solving a problem is identifying the problem and the problem has been identified. Remove the blinders and read the writing on the wall. I wonder which of our fine county commissioners will take the next step and offer to share their views publically in the ink of The Robesonian as offerred to them by Donnie Douglas? We want and need progress! The Public Schools of Robeson County was voted by the citizens to merge 5 systems into one in 1989...24 years ago which was a big change! By the way I voted for it because I believe in doing what is best for ALL the children. It definitely had it's challenges. It is time for a few more for the betterment of ALL the law-aiding, tax-paying citizns. Who knows....we could hit a state magazine one day for something other than the highest poverty!!

Ms. Smith has made some good points. I agree with her; this should be addresses at the voting booth in upcoming elections. It is also important that taxpayers and voters know that the County has more than $50 million in cash reserves and the commissioners will not even consider giving the taxpayers a small reduction in their tax bills, yet they hang on to their discretionary funds. They have forgotten who elected them and who they represent.
