LUMBERTON — Johnny Hunt, the superintendent of the Public Schools of Robeson County, is receiving a $10,000 bonus.

The Board of Education voted 5 to 4 Tuesday to give Hunt the bonus following a job evaluation conducted by some board members.

The decision to grant Hunt the bonus was hashed out during a closed session of the board’s regular monthly meetin — and the vote came in open session after a reporter for The Robesonian had left.

Loistine DeFreece, the board’s vice chairman, JoAnn Lowery, Bosco Locklear, John Campbell and Gary Strickland voted in favor of the bonus, and Dwayne Smith, Randy Lawson, Steve Martin and Brenda Fairley-Ferebee voted against. Board member Severeo Kerns was not at the meeting and Chairman Mike Smith only votes to break ties.

Dwayne Smith said he could not support giving the superintendent the bonus when teachers, teacher assistants, principals and other school employees who get good annual evaluations get nothing.

“Johnny is great to work with and he has done a tremendous job, but it’s hard to understand and justify why we can’t supplement our teachers and other school employees who also are evaluated each year,” Smith said. “I support our teachers and faculty. It’s a shame. They work with our kids and get evaluated every year and they get nothing but a pat on the back and a handshake.”

Fairley-Ferebee said that the bonus was granted on politics.

“Politics need to be taken out of the process,” she said. “We need to abide by the (superintendent’s) contract.”

Smith, the chairman, told The Robesonian this morning that if he had cast a vote he would have voted to grant Hunt the bonus.

“Everything on his evaluation was outstanding or above average,” Smith said. “He had no real bad marks.”

Smith said that the board is very “conscious and appreciative” of what school personnel do and reward them whenever possible.

“There are a lot of indicators that the schools are doing well and it takes everyone to make this happen,” he said. “But he is the man in charge and makes sure everything gets done. He is like the CEO of a large corporation.”

In August, the board extended Hunt’s contract by three years. In addition to extending his contract by three years, Hunt, who was making about $175,000 a year, received a raise of $10,000 each year of the extended contract.

Smith said this morning that there are no bonuses for the superintendent written into his current contract.

Hunt began his teaching career in the Public Schools of Robeson County in 1977. He started out as a social studies teacher at Southside Ashpole in Rowland and taught at six schools in the Public Schools of Robeson County before he became assistant superintendent for Human Resources for the district.

He is a former trustee of Robeson Community College and served 18 years as a Robeson County commissioner, including 12 as the board’s chairman. He stepped down as a commissioner in 1996 after he was named the schools superintendent.

Hello, Mr Hunt.

I am writing you an invitation to have dinner with me and my family. I will prepare you and whomever you invite, to my home. I will prepare you a grilled stake of your choice, salad, baked potato and a chocolate layer cake. I will only ask that you explain to me and my wife how you can justify the incentive you received for you performance. This will not be considered a gift. This would be for information purposes only. I would consider all positive comments received from this meeting. Would you Please Consider My Offering? No Strings attached!

I am a concerned parent. I do not understand how that a superintendent with a with an Adequate Yearly Progress rating of 16.7% can get a $10,000 bonus. Oh yes I can. This is a direct correlation to our government. People in power get bonuses no matter how they perform. Look back at the bonuses given to CEO's of the motor corporations after the largest government bailout in history. Mr. Hunt is not doing anything wrong. He is just coping a much larger problem. Congrats Mr Hunt on your (um) success. Next time our kids come to your house for fundraiser cookies, you can afford to buy about $10,000 worth to help your poor and in need school system.

I can't beleive this...PSRC system(teachers, students and all that applies)... Please be for real.. Students that have NO books, Teachers with NO supplies and NOT enough Teachers or Assistants for our students...We don't even have enough assistants for our SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN, when parents have meetings to that effect PSRC officals at the BOARD, seem to have BRAIN FARTS...

If Mr. Hunt is truly man of GOD and had any kind of conscious...HE WOULD NOT EXCEPT.... Point Blank and if he does except he has NO COMMON MORALS...

How is it that I see recent graduates from our area high schools (all of them) trying to get jobs but they can't pass basic reading comprehension and math tests?

I grew up thinking that a high school diploma was supposed to indicate proficiency in certain basic areas of education. Evidently, I've been wrong or else some things changed while I was busy growing older!

You should have have made that career choice cause thats where it sounds like your idea came from anyway. You had as much opportunity as Mr. Hunt to go to college, earn a bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees. Notice I said earn. Your a typical cricket Lumbee. Rossosright about Robesonians and people in general, most are envious of others who have been successful. I guarantee you all the folks in this comment section would have received a 10,ooo bonus gratefully. That being said, here is your bonus, get off your rump and try to better yourself.

Excuse me but don't put me in the stereotype you have for Lumbees because I can guarantee you I don't fit in that stereotype. Dr. Johnny Hunt is a crook. FYI superintendents in other surrounding counties turn down their bonus because they said they felt as teachers and other employers deserves the money rather than the superintendent. So with that being said get your facts straight!!!

Living in Robeson County who can't live off of 175,000 a year? He didn't need a raise because if your gonna make that kind of money for just sitting on your no good rump well we all might as well make that our career.

It absolutely amazes me that these board members are voting to give Hunt a bonus , we just fired 315 teacher assistants because we could not afford them, our teachers are getting paid barely over minimum wage when u calulate the hours they put in, our school roofs are leaking, our students dont have the books necessary for them to be successful and we now give a stupid bonus to the 3rd highest paid administrater in NC school systems or he will be after all his raises the next 3 years. what really upsets me is that after all the promblems we have in our school system he is pctured with this big smile on his face and accepted the bonus, why not just say let give it to the schools Johnny Hunt or dont you think they deserve some money, the people of Robeson County really needs to look at these board members you are voting in after all its our money they are giving away, Time to vote these hipocrites out for they are not for our school system or our students, last but not least "JOHNNY HUNT YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED" you know you do not deserve this bonus , maybe the 315 teacher assistants you fired should get it or at the very least our front line teachers who teach our chidren !

To those of you who are envious of others and where they live get a life. They worked hard to get where they are. I don't agree with ross much but he is right that many people in our county have money envy.

Kudos to those who voted against this bonus. I’m having a difficult time understanding the merit of this bonus when 1) teachers aren’t able to take restroom breaks because they have no assistants 2) students, as many have mentioned, are still without textbooks 6 months after school starts, 3) schools are invaded with termites, mold, and asbestos. Previous comments say that he deserves this raise because of the headaches he has from dealing with parents and nonsense. What about teachers who deal with disruptive kids and may go home with student inflicted bruises, parents with petty complaints, an immense amount of stress that comes with idea that you’re supposed to be miracle workers when test time comes around despite having inadequate resources? What about what teachers go through for the absurd pay that they receive? The right thing to do, considering the circumstances, would’ve been to decline the bonus….just my opinion.

As an educator in the Robeson County public schools, I am very disturbed by this "bonus". I am more concerned that the board has this amount of money for bonuses when students do not have adequate textbooks in class and teachers do not have paper in the copy machines. As the superintendent, I would like to know what his evaluation consisted of. Has he visited any of the local schools and volunteered? Does he know what is really going on with our schools? Yes, I assume is the answer because most of our high school students are less than 1% college ready based on test results and seniors graduate who have missed as many as 65 days of school in a given semester. But, our graduation rate is through the roof! Whatever happened to being here to support the students? Forget the lowly teachers, we haven't counted for some time. Now it is plain to see that the only one who deserves recognition received it, so a big Congratulations goes out to Dr. Hunt for his wonderful contributions to our education system in Rob. Co!

This comment is for Chairman Smith - I am a teacher at PSRC. It is funny, you said that johnny Hunt didn't have "any real bad marks" on his evaluation. Well, neither did I or thousands of other teachers, but we didn't receive a bonus or even a piece of chewing gum, for that matter !!!!

ATTENTION!

ALL ROBESON COUNTY SCHOOL EMPLOYEES:

MAYBE YOU ALL NEED TO RALLY ON

THE STEPS OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION...

REMEMBER ONLY the "LOUDEST" squeaking WHEEL GETS THE GREASE!

yes the loudest... they may all squeak but when you can only afford to pay for one guess which one you choose!

Everyone says Robeson County is the poorest county...

I have a question for all...

I just wanna know who else can afford to live in Hawks Nest Circle in Pembroke, NC besides Johnny Hunt and Kelli Blue?

one word to everyone whose light bulb also just came on... VOTE!

Why r u bringing Kellie Blue into to this. She has nothing to do with it. As far as living n Seven Hawks goes there r more than 2 houses over there so I guess u answered your own question. At least 9 other people besides the Blues and Hunts can afford to live over there.

Let's not forget that board member Gary Strickland is also a resident of the "Lumbee Oaks".

Really do not understand what he needs more $$$ for...and the educators are the ones going home everyday with a load on their backs. More work added to our plates, are blamed for childrens grades/behaviors, schools needing numerous repairs, havent moved up in pay in the last 5 years,etc....to mahy more things to name. Our county needs to take a stand...all the other states are doing it. When school starts back...all employees need to be on the front lawn of the board or at the steps in Raleigh protesting!!! It will be hard to replace ALL PSRC employees in just a few days, if everybody will take a stand!!

The total cost of this bonus to the county will exceed $12,500 when you consider matching FICA, retirement, and other benefit payments!

We challenge either one of the five school board who claims that hs/she had a weak moment when voting for this bonus members to come up with a way to direct these available funds to the teachers or students!

LET'S SEE WHICH ONE OF YOU CAN GIT ER DUN!

Boss, you said he doesn't need all that money. Just because you may settle for the bare minimum life has to offer, doesn't mean everybody does.. Who says you need that old 20 year old clunker car, why not just buy a moped? Who say's you need that big ol trailer, why not an old shack in the woods? You don't get to determine how someone else lives based on what income you earn..

In other words like moma used to say, "mind your own business". Don't worry about what someone else has, worry about what you don't...

Really? Am I missing something here? What happened to good ol' fashion medals or trophies. Give the $10,000 to schools that can't afford enough books and boxes of tissues. It is interesting at who voted for and who voted against.
