Staff report

RALEIGH — State Rep. Garland E. Pierce has been appointed by House Speaker Thom Tillis to serve as a member of the House Ethics Committee. Pierce represents District 48, which includes Robeson County.

The Ethics Committee, by state statute, operates differently from other committees in the General Assembly. Because much of its work is confidential, it is not subject to the state’s open meetings law and much of its work is conducted in closed session. The committee functions primarily as an advisory board.

The committee includes 12 members, six from the House and six from the Senate, who are appointed by the House speaker and the Senate president pro-tempore. The membership includes the same number of Democrats and Republicans.
