LUMBERTON — When the Lumberton girl’s soccer season started a few weeks ago, coach Kenny Simmons knew his two main scoring threats were Michaela Nash and Madison Britt. In Thursday’s 5-0 win over East Bladen, Nash was out with an injury, leaving Britt as the main cog in the attack.

The junior made the most of it, finding her spots to pick up all five of the Pirates’ goals as Lumberton picked up its fifth win of the year.

“She’s very capable,” Simmons said. “She’s a good player and we need her doing what she did tonight for us to be successful down the road.”

The shots she had were, for the most part, open looks only feet from the goalie that gave her options on where to put the ball.

Her first look came in the 15th minute, when she broke free towards the net on a pass from Chloe Locklear, putting it past East Bladen goalie Abby Ward.

In the 24th minute, she struck again, getting within several feet of the goal before putting a shot in the upper-left corner of the net to make it 2-0 on an assist from Summer Martin.

Britt then had three goals in the second half, scoring on another pass from Locklear in the 51st minute and on a penalty kick in the 56th minute before putting in her fifth on a pass from Hancel Tobon in the 74th minute.

Britt’s goals were more than enough during a contest Lumberton dominated possession, effectively keeping the Eagles out of their defensive third, limiting the amount of shots on goal.

The only major stretch of the game that East Bladen controlled possession was for about the first eight minutes, during which the Eagles kept Lumberton from getting the ball for an offensive run.

“To their credit, they were playing well at the begining and I think our girls settled in and took control of the game,” Simmons said. “Pretty much throughout after that, we controlled the tempo and the majority of the possession.”

East Bladen’s only other major offensive chances came late in the game.

Lumberton outshot East Bladen 12 to 4 in shots on goal, with Ward stopping seven shots. Lumberton goalies Nikki Hansen and Kendall Blaine combined for the Pirates’ four saves.

The win keeps Lumberton undefeated with one game left before starting Southeastern Conference play on Wednesday against Pinecrest. Simmons said he’s pleased with the start the team has had.

“You couldn’t ask for more,” he said. “We’re really young, so we knew coming in that we graduated nine seniors from last year’s squad, and it would be kind of like a rebuilding year in a lot of ways. But at the same time, I thought we could be pretty good but I didn’t know if it was going to be early that we’d play as well as we have and win games like we’re winning.

“It’s happening early on, so that’s a positive,” he said.
