LUMBERTON — The Board of Education for the Public Schools of Robeson County will discuss the status of the old Townsend School gym when it holds its regular monthly meeting tonight. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the schools administration building on Caton Road.

Late last year, the board authorized its attorney to draw up a lease proposal for the old Townsend Middle School gym that was to be approved by the town of Maxton. At the same time, the board authorized $45,000 in insurance money and $45,000 in local money to be used for improvements to the facility, repairs to the roof, addition of a new wood floor and replacement of windows.

Maxton officials have been lobbying the school district for years to allow the town to use the old gym as a site for recreation programs. The school district has declared the facility as surplus property.

Among other issues, the board will discuss roof repairs at South Robeson High School and the four-day work week for school district employees during the summer.

According to the board’s agenda, The Science, Math & Technology Teacher of the Year for grades kindergarten through eighth will be recognized, as will be Battle of the Books Winners for grades second and third, Students of Excellence, and Future Cities competition winners.
