PEMBROKE — Wiley Barrett was elected chairman of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s board of trustees in a unanimous vote during a special meeting on Tuesday.
A Southern Pines resident, Barrett will complete the term of Dr. Robin Cummings, who resigned from the board on March 4 to take a job as director of the Rural Health and Community Care Division of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Barrett joined the board in April. He is a career educator and 1969 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He was an elected member and is a former chairman of the Moore County school board.
Barrett, who was appointed as a trustee by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, will serve as chairman through the 2012-2013 fiscal year. The board will vote again on a full slate of officers at is first meeting of the 2013-2014 year.
