RALEIGH — Poultry processor House of Raeford Farms Inc. said Thursday that it will close a turkey-slaughtering plant in Hoke County that employs 950 people after years of declining or flat consumption of its frozen turkey products.

House of Raeford spokesman David Witter said the decision was not related to a three-year federal environmental crimes case that ended with sentencing two weeks ago.

“It was absolutely just a business decision,” Witter said. “It had absolutely nothing to do with that matter or anything else.”

A judge placed the company on two years of probation and assessed a $150,000 fine for knowingly committing Clean Water Act violations. Operators of the plant now closing in Raeford discharged untreated wastewater containing turkey blood and internal organs directly into Raeford’s municipal sewage treatment plant, prosecutors said.

The family-owned, Rose Hill-based company will shut down the plant later this year and shift more heavily into chicken products, after fulfilling contracts for frozen turkeys for the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, Witter said. Workers will receive severance packages, priority hiring opportunities at other plants, and job placement help, the company said.

A turkey hatchery in Rose Hill that employs 30 people also will close, with most of those workers offered jobs at other company facilities. About 140 farms near the closing plant will see the end of their contracts to supply turkeys to House of Raeford, but the company said it will ask the facilities whether they want to shift to raising chickens.

A second plant in Raeford that employs 400 and processes lunch meat, ground turkey and chicken, and battered and breaded poultry nuggets will remain open, the company said.

Privately-owned House of Raeford processes chickens and turkeys at plants in North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Louisiana. The company’s chicken division includes about 5,300 employees, 2,300 of them in North Carolina.

Chicken represents more than 90 percent of the company’s sales and has grown considerably, while last year’s Midwest drought, high corn prices, and falling turkey prices have hurt profits from turkey, the company said.

“We intend to further expand the chicken business over the next two to three years so that our increased chicken volume will replace the turkey production we are phasing out,” House of Raeford CEO Bob Johnson said.

Look, boys, girls, and whatever else is out there reading this....the bulk of the blame for this closure and all of the others lies directly in the Presidents lap. The man had no private business background and sees business through the same eyes as a union organizer. In other worse, he hates the concept. He uses some pretty powerful tools to jerk businesses around like a toy dog on a lease. These tools are the EPA (who has helped him keep his promise of closing coal fired power plants), the Department of Labor (look at the proposed move of the car maker from Washington state to SC that they blocked), and don't forget the IRS, which targets anyone that is on the presidents "don't like" list.

Anyone who can't see this for what it is has got to be a mental midget. Keep on sitting there and repeating your mantra "Obama good, Obama good...." Hope it works for you..

That is so sad...NC needs that like I need a second belly-button. Businesses all over the country are hanging on by their fingernails, hoping the economy will recover So far, the government, as it is presently configured, has done nothing positive, except grow more government. I don't believe the bit about the suit..Some companies will just as well fold, as have to pay off a suit. Maybe the Chinese will buy it and reopen..seems that they like to have pigs around...They are buyning American businesses right and left..

High corn prices have closed this plant down.

THANK-YOU obama FOR REQUIRING ETHANOL IN GAS. to you democrat voters ethanol is corn. We have more oil in the ground than anywhere else in the world and obama says no to drilling and yes to higher food prices because of ethanol.

Well there you have it, another gift from obama, allowing these folks to go on unemployment, welfare and foodstamps...

And we all know, once you go welfare, you don't go back...

Here's a case of "when your only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." I'm waiting for you to blame the the next near asteroid strike, solar eruptions, the weather, etc on the President.

I'm pretty sure ethanol predates the President and is the product of a super powerful mainly REPUBLICAN farm lobby that has been extremely successful in hiding the true costs of our crops with farm subsidy programs.

I'm also pretty sure that chickens, the demand for which is increasing, also eat corn.

As usual you didn't read the article; instead of placing blame where it truly deserves to be placed, you have once again blamed the president. Once again Ross is Totally Wrong!!!!!!

I had to listen for 8 years the ignorance of the democrat voter blaming everything from fat people, aids, high oil prices, wars, etc, etc... on my beloved George W. Bush.

This is too much fun blaming everything on this moron playing President in the White House now.

It is supposed to rain monday.... OBAMA'S FAULT!

Boy you people are too easy, and angry. Your lives have not improved one bit under this man. Stop waiting on another man to make your life worth.. Do something like we Republicans do, depend on ourselves under God for happiness and success... obama wont do it, he'll lie to you and of course you'll believe him, but look at yourself after 5 years under his rule.

ps.If you'd believe in God like you do this man, just think how much happier you'd be.

Well unlike yourself I don't go around calling people boy; this shows your underlying racism or better yet your outright racism. As for your comment about my life improving under his administration;my socio-economic status was well established before he was elected, and today I'm doing quite well for myself. And yes God is #1 in my life and because of this he opened up the windows of heaven and poured out blessings. Ross I would suggest you examine your heart because I perceive you've hardened it over the years because I see it in your posts. I'll continue to pray for your soul!!!!

Wait a minute!.... lumbeewarrior, Your ignorance percieves you. You got some nerve calling me racist, pal. LOOK AT YOUR SCREEN NAME, doesn't get any more racial than that. You'd have a hissy-fit if someone had a screen name Europeanwhitewarrior. The image that comes to your mind when you see that name is the same image that I see when I see your screen name...racist.

Ross, American warrior!

Really Robeson you are correct. As usual Ross is wrong.

Consider the following form the EPA website: "The Renewable Fuel Standard program was created under the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 2005, and established the first renewable fuel volume mandate in the United States. As required under EPAct, the original RFS program (RFS1) required 7.5 billion gallons of renewable- fuel to be blended into gasoline by 2012." Did you see that Ross? 2005. Remind me when Obama took office and who was president in 2005. I forget.
