LHS soccer beats Hoke

LUMBERTON — The Lumberton girls soccer team got strong output on both ends of the field Monday in a 4-1 win over Hoke.

The Pirates (7-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) allowed only three shots on goal and got two goals each from Michaela Nash and Madison Britt to get their first conference win of the year.

Nash opened the scoring with a first-half goal that gave Lumberton a 1-0 lead at halftime. She scored her second goal shortly after the break on a an assist from Britt. Britt then put the game away with the final two goals. Goalies Brittany Bolin and Nikki Hansen combined for three saves.

Swett, Lumberton place at Pinehurst

PINEHURST — The Purnell Swett and Lumberton golf teams took third and fourth Monday in a tournament at Pinehurst No. 5.

Swett had a team score of 324, eight strokes behind second-place Scotland, and Lumberton finished at 331.

Pinecrest won the meet with a low score of 280, including a 65 from individual winner Josh Martin.

Thomas Miller posted a 72 to lead Lumberton. Warren Bowen had a low score of 77 for Swett and Justin Chavis had an 81.

Swett softball loses to Ashley

PEMBROKE —Purnell Swett got strong hitting but struggled defensively in an 11-3 loss to Eugene Ashley Monday.

The Rams (0-8) got triples from Sequoia Locklear and Mikala Lowry and finished the game with six total hits, but also allowed six errors.

Locklear finished 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Swett. Sarah Horrell led Ashley, going 3-for-3 and getting the win in the pitcher’s circle.

UNCP baseball jumps in polls

PEMBROKE — A 4-0 week that included an upset of then-No. 8 Catawba on the road recaptured the attention of national voters as The University of North Carolina at Pembroke baseball team jumped 10 spots in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll and re-entered the CollegeBaseballLineup.com top 30 ranking.

UNCP (20-6, 9-6 PBC), fresh off a weekend road sweep of Georgia Southwestern on Saturday and Sunday, was ranked No. 15 in the latest CBN poll. The Braves are ranked No. 20 in the latest release by CollegeBaseballLineup.com. The Braves were absent from that poll for two weeks, having ranked as high as No. 17 in the online magazine’s Feb. 18 poll.

UNCP tennis loses to Montevallo

PEMBROKE – Montevallo took an early 3-0 advantage after a perfect doubles sweep, and then booked three more wins in singles play to defeat the UNCP tennis team 6-3 in Peach Belt Conference action on Monday afternoon at the UNCP Varsity Tennis Courts.

The win marked the first time in series history that the Falcons (7-6, 3-5 PBC) have beaten the Lady Braves (6-7, 1-6). UNCP holds a 3-1 all-time record in the young new series with Montevallo.

Youth softball registration extended

LUMBERTON — The lumberton Recreation Department has extended the registration deadline for girls’ softball until 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The program is open for girls who are 5 and can’t be older than 16 on/by April 30.

Registration is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Bill Sapp. The cost is $10 and a birth certificate must be shown for first-time participants. Anyone interested in coaching, please call Scott Graham at 910-671-3870.
