Festival: The Red Springs Street Festival will be held April 19 from 1 to 5 p.m. in downtown Red Springs. The festival will feature the Bubbles in the Breeze Railcar Rides hosted by the Red Springs and Northern Railroad. The railcar ride at the festival is $2 per child under 13 and $3 per adult and provides kids with a bottle of bubbles. There will also be music, arts and crafts and a mime. Theater: The University Theater is producing the musical, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change!” on April 22, 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. and April 25 at 2 p.m. Admission is free for students, faculty, and staff with ID, $3 for non-UNCP students, and $5 for general admission. “I Love You, You’re Perfect Now Change,” tells the story of several relationships in a series of vignettes.  This musical takes you on a journey with each couple to unveil what they secretly think about first dates, marriage, and even having children. Look-alike contest: The Boys and Girls Club of Lumberton/Robeson County and the city of Lumberton Recreation Department will hold a grandparent/parent/child look-alike contest at Biggs Park Mall April 25. Festival: Floyd’s Strawberry Patch on Stone Road in Fairmont will host their fifth annual Kid’s Festival April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be activities for children such as face painting, bounce castles and coloring books, among other attractions. Spring Fest: Rowland will hold its annual Spring Fest and Art Show April 25. Health Checks: Free health screenings will be offered on April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rennert Volunteer Fire Department, 9896 Rennert Road in Shannon. Southeastern Regional Medical Center’s Community Health Services is sponsoring the screens which will check total cholesterol/HDL, blood pressure and blood sugar for adults 18 years or older. Height, weight and body mass index will also be measured at the screen. Participants with diabetes will be offered additional HbA1c testing which shows average blood sugar rates over the last three months. Strawberry Festival: The N.C. Strawberry Festival in Chadbourn will present a free Outdoor Dove Brothers concert as part of the opening ceremonies on April 28 at 7 p.m. The stage is located next to Food Lion on North Brown St. in Chadbourn. Volunteers: Southeastern Regional Medical Center is now accepting applications for junior volunteers to serve during the summer of 2009.  Applicants must be ages 14 to 18, entering at least the 9th grade and have an 80 or above average in the current school year. Camp Care: Applications are being accepted through May 1 for Southeastern Hospice’s Camp Care, a camp for local youth between the ages of 8 and 16 who have experienced the death of a loved one. The weekend camp will be held May 15 to 17 at Camp Monroe in Laurel Hill, N.C. Activities planned for the camp include making crafts, playing sports and learning grief-coping skills. Shag Lessons: The Lumberton Recreation Department will sponsor shag lessons. New classes start May 4 and continue on May 11, 18 and 25. Theater: Studio One Lab of PSRC presents “Lights, Camera, Action,” where Hollywood's greatest musicals come alive through a multimedia blending of film and stage. The Lumberton Recreation Department will sponsor a Summer Activity Program at the Parkview Activity Center for youth ages 5 through 12 beginning June 15, and ending August 14. The Summer Activity Program will operate Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program will be closed during the week of July 4th. Registration will begin March 16, and end May 15 at the Parkview Activity Center, between the hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The fee for this program is $5 per week. The group, open to all women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and other cancers of the reproductive system, is free and no pre-registration is required. Volunteers: The Gibson Cancer Center, an affiliate of Southeastern Regional Medical Center, needs licensed cosmetologists, manicurists and massage therapists to volunteer at the “Terrific Tuesday” event on the first Tuesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are also needed to oversee arts and crafts activities during the event. “Terrific Tuesday” is designed to help patients and their family members feel more at ease during their visits to the Center by offering healthy refreshments, crafts, manicures, makeovers, hair cuts and chair massages. In addition, the Center is looking for volunteers Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until noon to distribute movies, music, magazines and refreshments to patients. Diabetes Community Network meets monthly The Diabetes Community Center sponsors a Diabetes Community Network that meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.
