LUMBERTON — Cynthia Moore completed the hexadecagon of qualifiers for the United Way new car giveaway on Tuesday at Peterson Toyota, ending the 16-week process to select the fair-share givers who will have a chance to win a new car on Jan. 28.
“Close it up and give it a good spin now,” Pete Peterson, the general manager, said of the cage before he drew a name.
Moore is a Lumberton city employee, the second to qualify. She could not be reached for comment.
Half of the fair-share givers to qualify are BB&T employees, and one employee each from Alamac, Parkton Postal Service, Department of Social Services, Robeson County, Piedmont Natural Gas, and Tredegar Corporation qualified.
Qualifiers were pulled from a pool of 843 people who donate the equivalent of an hour’s pay each month to the Robeson County United Way, which distributes money to 18 local organizations.
Cindy Edwards from Southeastern Family Violence Center was at the final drawing, as were United Way board members Van Strickland, Jan Tedder-Rogers, and Marvin Stephens. Peterson Toyota staff members were spectators at the event: Mike Pittman, Raymond Oxendine, Garry McMillan, Patrick Floyd, Gladys Hunt, Robert Peterson, and Pete Peterson and his dog, Cleo.
After 16 weeks of drawings at one of four participating car dealerships — Jerry Johnson Chevrolet, Lumberton Honda, Lumberton Nissan, and Peterson Toyota — the final drawing at Biggs Park Mall will determine which of the finalists will win a new car. It will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 28.
