ST. PAULS — Two teenagers have been arrested and charged with beating and robbing a 66-year-old man of $15 as he tended to his garden Wednesday morning, according to Maj. Howard Branch of the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

Robert Musselwhite, of 853 E. Great Marsh Church Road, was robbed at gunpoint and beaten with a handgun about 9:30 a.m., Branch said. He was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, where he was treated for several cuts on his head and then released.

Lawmen arrested two teenagers in St. Pauls after they had received a description of the assailants’ vehicle, said Branch.

Aaron Jerome Wise, 17, of 145 Spring Branch Drive, St. Pauls, and Martize Douglas, 18, of 251 Barts Road, St. Pauls, were arrested and each was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, according to Branch. Each was being held in the county jail under $250,000 bond.

Musselwhite was picking beans in his yard when a green Buick drove up to his home and one of the teens asked him for directions to Rowland, Branch said. After Musselwhite gave them directions, the two teenagers drove off.

“They went down the road and turned around and came back to ask him again, but this time the suspect pulled out a handgun from his pants and pointed it at Mr. Musselwhite and ordered him to ‘give up what ya got,’ ” Branch said.

The teenager hit Musselwhite on the head with the gun and Musselwhite fell to the ground, Branch said, and then the assailant stole the man’s wallet and $15.

Detective Tom Wilson is working the investigation.

Navycva42..Take a ride through Pembroke and you will see the same private holding, pants on their knees there also.

Thats the way most young men of all races wear their pants today all across the country.

I also..see people mainly women of all races wearing PJ bottoms in public. Whats your point?

Next you complain about places being "off limits" to you and your wife. If you're an elderly man I some what understand your point but..If you're not an elderly man sounds like you need to "chew some rocks and man-up!" Don't forget Robeson county is ranked #1 in crime.

NavyCVA42 wrote: "you cannot drive thru Lumberton without seeing them with their pants on their knees touching their privates-what's going on?" Well, what's going on is they are just doing the BEST they can. Understand? They don't know any better. Can't learn any better. The only way to stop it is to pinch their heads off when they're born before they can grow up(?)and reproduce another generation of the same evolutionary rejects. In the meantime, just remember: They're doing the BEST THEY CAN.

I agree that nothing will get better in this county. We can all fool ourselves and sometimes other folks (like the retirement community status), but the truth always comes out. Crime is bad here. People are not safe in their own homes, as is proven by this very article.

Our so-called leaders do nothing to promote our county or make it better. It's all about the almighty dollar. The sad thing is that the majority of our leaders (commissioners and others) are local people, that feed off of their own kind. They're draining us dry and keeping us in a time warp deliberately. If we become progressive and draw many new people in, then folks will expect more and demand better schools and crime reduction. Those that are lining their pockets won't get away with much.

I've said it before and I'll say it once again; to expect change for the better we need to look at what we have going on now and get rid of it. Why does no one really care what our county salaries are? We're making some people rich, while our county continues to fester. People should be outraged when they see these things, yet they aren't and I can't figure out why.

I know Mr Musslewhite and he would do about anything in the world for you if he could. These are good comments, but the problem is in our law officers and our courts. I carried my 74 y/o father in law to sheriffs dept over 3 weeks ago because his grandson had pulled a butcher knife on him and told him "I will kill you old man". This was after the old man confronted him for stealing his air compressor the night before and he admitted to taking it but told his grandfather to prove it. Well the magistrate would not let him files charges for the larceny or the communicating threats even with me as a witness and sent us next door to file a report with the sheriff's office. We did and still have heard nothing from the detectives that we were told would be contacting us. This guy has a rap sheet 10-15 pages for larceny. I guess when the old man is laying in the floor dead then maybe we will hear from a detective or if the old man shoots him in self defense they will want to lock him up. We already have papers from some other larceny charges against him and heard on the scanner one night they were going to serve the papers until the other people on the scanner started talking about the guy being a runner. He has never been served and it has been 2 months.

Had Mr. Musselwhite pistol whipped one of these TEENAGERS he would be charged with a HATE CRIME.

IT'S time to make home invasions and ( on your property) crimes a big deal.

I expect to see trouble downtown and try to never go to ATMS, no-where at night, I circle the parking lot wherever I go before I park--looking for anything that doesn't fit.

now we have to go to the mailbox with a gun in our pocket. My wife was at Food Lion today on e-town road and her and a friend were harrassed all the way to the car by DUDE wanting money. The manager has been contacted.

now the GROCERY store is off limits.

even without a crime being committed--we continue to lose our freedom.

We are losing an entire generation of young , black males to crime. You cannot drive thru Lumberton without seeing them with their pants on their knees, touching their privates--, what is going on??

We can't go to Shoneys anymore--they are at the BREAKFAST BAR in their PJS--the manager say they have no policy for that--all civility has been cast aside!!

these lames go to my school. well i think the one either moved, or dropped out! anyways they're always stirring up trouble and 'thinking' theyre big and bad. let's get real for a second.. if you jumped a lil' old man for $15 then obviously you have some serious problems. these guys arn't as big & tough as they think they are. two against one, and better yet a lil' old man who hasn't done harm to you!! i personallity hope these two pull a lot of time & hopefully the rest of their lil' clique will not try and take up their slack! this is pitful, i kinda hope they let that soap slip!!!!!

I wish to goodness that he had shot them dead. More scum of the earth. Now Carter, Carmichael or Daniels will let them off with probalby time served because the man didn't die.

Yes,the billboard in Lumberton is a real laugh about being a retirment community. Anyone with enough sense to google crime rates can sew the comparative crime rates and tax rates. And they will go eleswhere, leaving this place to stew in its own vomit and blood. Unless the Lord returns soon, it will be imploding shortly, as the leaches outnumber the earners, or kill them off.

This men are grown, ignorant, and lazy punks. At this age they can make the right decisions without parental input. Parents aren't to blame for this one. These grown men are.

WOW Wise looks 35 years old to me--

Happy MR. Musselwhite is going to be OK-.

Sorry he has lost his "feeling of safety" at home FOREVER!!

you can't risk helping people anymore--these thugs did this to him for $7.50 EACH!!
« tellingitlikeitis wrote on Thursday, Jul 29 at 01:03 PM »
Sorry, ignorant, people. Will rob but won't work. At least let me say they won't work in the free world. They will dig ditches, cut grass, and clean toilets while in prison but will not work in a free society. IGNORANT.

This is a perfect example of why this county can't move forward and why we are the top of the list for crime. A man can't work in his own yard without being attacked by worthless hoodlums. Shame on the parents of these young men for not teaching them to earn a dollar.

And Lumberton being the county seat actually is the first designated retirement community? Seriously? What older person would want to live where this is the norm?
