PEMBROKE — A 26-year-old Maxton man was been arrested Sunday after he was found hiding and charged with setting fire to a Pembroke home that he was renting with another man, according to sheriff’s Lt. Brian Duckworth.
Larry Dewayne Jones, of Ardell Road, Maxton, was arrested at about 10:40 a.m. after he was found hiding in a barn near his family’s home in Maxton. He is charged with second-degree arson, burning personal property, and larceny for setting fire to an apartment he was sharing with Jessie Locklear on the 1000 block of N.C. 711 in Pembroke, according to Duckworth.
Jones was also wanted on unrelated charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, larceny, two counts of trespassing, violating probation, and failure to appear for driving while impaired and reckless driving to endanger, according to Duckworth.
Jones and Locklear had been arguing on Sept. 22 after Locklear told Jones to move out. Jones accused Locklear of setting fire to his clothes in the front yard of the apartment and as retaliation Jones set fire to Locklear’s property inside of the apartment, Duckworth said.
He is being held at Robeson County jail on $29,500 bond. His first court appearance was scheduled for today.
Damage to the building was estimated at $15,000.
