PEMBROKE — Lumbee Tribal Chairman Paul Brooks held off a strong challenge from former Chairman Jimmy Goins on Tuesday to hold onto his seat as tribal chairman.
Brooks received 2,559 votes, or 52 percent of the total votes cast. Goins received 2,042, or 42 percent of the votes cast.
A third candidate, Lynn Bruce Jacobs, received 298 votes, or 6 percent of total votes cast.
Seven seats on the Tribal Council were also filled on Tuesday. Districts and winners include:
— District 1, Evan Davenport
— District 4, Jonathan Locklear
— District 5 , Bobby Dean Oxendine
— District 7, Robert Chavis
— District 9, Anita Hammonds Blanks
— District 10, Terry Collins
— District 14, Homer Fields









Mr. Brooks is not the crook. The other one was. Goins was the one with the little side deal with the casino thugs, not Brooks.
I know you probably don't believe me, but Brooks is a good man, and its sad that he won by such a small margin and that so few voted. Sort of like the national election, except the right man won this one. I don't envy him in this job. He has ticks, snakes, and wolves at every side. I wish him the best. The man is a great family man, with a wonderful family. I'm sure his detractors will start trying to tear him down ASAP, because he doesn't play crooked.
Give the man a chance Ross, at least. You might be surprised. The Lumbees are a self defeating people, who probably will not get ahead as a whole, but there are a few bright spots (candles) out there.
4500 people out of 60,000 lumbees? Close this mess down, it's apparent noone is interested.
