Junior captain Blake Greene hurried to the sideline, took out his mouthpiece and politely questioned his playcaller’s decision in a questionable spot. It’s the kind of in-game nuance that goes unnoticed for the Red Devils’ junior quarterback, Robeson County’s best player and sideline motivator.
In shorts and Converses at practice Tuesday, Greene gunned throw after thrown at glove-less wide receivers inside Red Springs’ gym. The unnecessary zip on the football, even on five to 10-yard routes, showcases Greene’s passion to improve with every snap.
“He’s ultra-competitive,” Coltharp said. “That’s just the way he is. Never takes a play off and always gets after his teammates.”
Coltharp is putting his team’s postseason fate in the hands of an athlete whose responsible for a 1A-leading 60 touchdowns this season tonight at undefeated James Kenan. Red Springs is two wins away from a berth in the state championship game.
