Nursing a 10-point lead with possession inside his own 30-yard line, Red Springs coach George Coltharp called a wide receiver reverse last week in a second-round win against Pender. The play lost six yards on second down and led to a punt midway through the fourth quarter.

Junior captain Blake Greene hurried to the sideline, took out his mouthpiece and politely questioned his playcaller’s decision in a questionable spot. It’s the kind of in-game nuance that goes unnoticed for the Red Devils’ junior quarterback, Robeson County’s best player and sideline motivator.

In shorts and Converses at practice Tuesday, Greene gunned throw after thrown at glove-less wide receivers inside Red Springs’ gym. The unnecessary zip on the football, even on five to 10-yard routes, showcases Greene’s passion to improve with every snap.

“He’s ultra-competitive,” Coltharp said. “That’s just the way he is. Never takes a play off and always gets after his teammates.”

Coltharp is putting his team’s postseason fate in the hands of an athlete whose responsible for a 1A-leading 60 touchdowns this season tonight at undefeated James Kenan. Red Springs is two wins away from a berth in the state championship game.

Week 13 Record: 2-0; Overall 50-11

I've reached 50 wins this season and haven't picked a game wrong in four weeks. Here's where it gets tough. The football team most of us expected to be in this position in August is still alive and relatively healthy, utilizing light practices free of hitting since early October.

Red Springs (10-3) at James Kenan (12-0)

Red Springs passed for 300 yards and ran for another 150 in last year's second-round win against James Kenan, but that's before the Tigers got it rolling defensively with minor adjustments in the offseason and have reeled off 12 straight victories since. James Kenan faces an uphill battle says coach Ken Avent Jr. trying to defend a fast-paced offense it isn't familiar with in the Tri-County Conference. The Red Devils have an equally difficult task stopping James Kenan's triple option. Gashed by Pender last week on the ground, Red Springs won't let it happen again. The Tigers haven't allowed more than three touchdowns all season ... until tonight.
